Description

  • The flavor emphasis of this beer rests squarely on the synergy of maltiness, dark roasted malts, and oat flavor
  • Includes Northern Brewer and British Kent Goldings hops
  • Estimated ABV: 5.7%
  • Estimated IBUs: 38-42
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

Our Oatmeal Stout is loaded to the brim with malt! A helping of Flaked Oats give this brew a smooth, almost slick, mouthfeel, while three different dark malts—Chocolate, Black Patent, and Roasted Barlery—combine for a very complex roast flavor. A lower bittering rate from a moddest hop addition allows the flavor emphasis to rest squarely on the synergy of maltiness, dark roasted malts, and oat flavor. Oatmeal Stout is one of our most consistently well-reviewed kits and comes highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a dark, roasty beer.

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.058-62
  • SRM (Color Range): 38
  • IBUs: 38-42
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 5.7%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. The recommended yeast(s) can be found below. All grains will come milled.

Please Note: In order to better serve our customers, we are now offering our extract recipe kits with either Liquid Malt Extract (LME) or Dried Malt Extract (DME). The majority of our DME kits were converted from the LME version, which is why you may notice slight variances in the extract names and quantities on your recipe sheet. You may also find that your Specific Gravity and ABV% are slightly higher if you choose DME. Whether LME or DME, add all extracts provided according to the recipe sheet. For further details, please reference the conversion chart below.

I plan to blanket the neighborhood with maltiness on Thanksgiving Day. Festive but drinkable all year round in case it's 80 deg already before ready to drink.

This is the oatmeal stout kit I have been looking for!
I highly recommend this kit. I have tried multiple oatmeal stout kits from other sources, but this kit is the best to date. The kit is well organized. The instructions are clear. The resulting beer is very good. Here are a few brewing notes: Prior to mashing, I toasted the oatmeal on baking sheets at 350F till they started to get some golden color, to bring out the nutty and tasted bread notes in the flavor. I mashed at 170F. That will leave longer chain sugars that will help supply the beer with a bigger body and mouthfeel. I used White Labs WLP005 English Ale yeast for a malty backbone. The resulting beer has a smooth mouth-feel. The body was spot on, nice and medium. The flavor and aroma show a lot of fruity esters. It was the favorite among my family of the 6 beers I brewed for the holidays. This kit will become part of my regular rotation, and may become the base kit for all of my stouts moving forward.

Fun recipe, great beer!
This was my 7th batch of homebrew, and my very first attempt at a partial mash. I used a 5-gallon paint strainer bag and a 5-gallon beverage cooler for my mash tun. The mashing and sparging went well- I did forget to recirculate but the paint strainer bag held everything in very well so it didn't actually end up affecting the beer.
I used Wyeast 1056 American yeast and it was in the fermenter at 68-70 deg for about 2 weeks, then 3 days in the keg at 25psi to force carbonate. It was only 18 days old when we tapped it (yesterday) but it already tastes great and has a very elegant appearance. The beer and the head have a lovely rust colored tint to them, and the mouthfeel is silky smooth as one would expect from the oatmeal.
Brewing this batch (and the subsequent results) has given me the confidence to start all-grain brewing. Highly recommend this recipe for both the partial mash experience, and for the delicious beer that is produced.

WOW!
I'm about 14 batches into my latest obsession and I have to say this is the best beer I have ever brewed and tasted. Everyone who has tasted it agrees with me, even one who doesn't care for dark beers at all. 25 days in primary, 2 days cold crashed in secondary, then kegged. It lasted three weeks in the keg and really came into it's own after 2 weeks in the keg. I brewed the AG version last weekend. I replaced 5 lbs. of the base malt with Maris Otter and upped the oats to 2 lbs. and even toasted them. I ended up using Irish Ale yeast because my LHBS didn't have the English Ale yeast in stock. It started fermenting almost immediately and it finished and krausen dropped in just two days (12 hr. starter with stir plate) I couldn't believe it. I had to taste it to make sure nothing went wrong and it smells and tastes awesome after just 3 days in primary. It's going to be tough to wait the month or so for it to condition.

Velvety smooth
Great to find a beer of this caliber in a kit. Just roasted enough to compliment the oatmeal. Very well balanced, an outstanding stout.

Excellent!
I wanted to brew something special to celebrate my brother's retirement. So I picked a style that I knew he and his wife would enjoy: a stout.
This was my first time brewing a stout AND my first time doing a partial mash, so I was naturally a little nervous at first, but it was a success! And the flavor?...YUMMM! I have not been a stout fan in the past, but this brew just may have changed my taste buds. I will brew this again.

Fantastic Oatmeal Stout Kit
This kit provides a way more complex malt profile than other kits that I've tried. I made a very well received Breakfast Stout variation with this recipe with one fundamental substitution. I replaced the water with Maple sap, not syrup: sap. It was legend - wait for it - dary!

A great smooth classic stout
An amazing recipe! Very easy to work with mini mash kit. I've brewed this twice. If you like a classic creamy stout, this is the kit for you. As an added bonus, add 1/4 cup vanilla extract (and extract it yourself! For an amazing unbelievable beer.

Love Watching the Fallout
One of my favorite brews. Haven't made a bad one yet from MoreBeer. Really like this dark beer...as do the neighbors. Love watching it fall out after the pour.
