Brought to us by Nate Smith, this IPA truly is a hop bomb! With almost 10oz. of hops in a 5 gallon batch, this is one that hop-heads definitely need to try. Falconer's Flight, Citra®, Magnum, Columbus and Centennial all play a role in the clean bitterness and amazing hop aroma and flavor that you get out of this IPA. Nate is a participant in the Brewing Network's Sunday Session podcast, an active member of D.O.Z.E. (Diablo Order of Zymiracle Enthusiasts) Homebrew Club, and has been homebrewing for over 14 years. Needless to say, Nate's familiar with the scene!

Nate's Recommendations on the Citrus Bomb IPA:

Use WLP001 (with a starter) or WY1056 yeast. Plan on an 18-20 day fermentation: 10 Days at 65F, then raise to 68F on the 10th day.  Add your dry hops 5 days later, and rack 3-5 days after that.  *NOTE* Fining with biofine is recommended!

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.066-71
  • SRM (Color Range): 7
  • IBUs: 55-60
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 7.3%

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

Not as citrus-y as expected, but still very good
Came out really nice. After the force carbonation, was just ok, but not great. After a month of keg conditioning, it mellowed out and cleared up to a gorgeous red color. Nice malt backbone, great head and lacing with a crisp finish. Very nice!

Shaping up to be a great summer IPA
It's a pleasure to drink this beer. Dry hopping with the three ounces of Falconer's Flight hops produces an aroma that is inviting, complex and satisfying. I tweaked the recipe slightly by steeping with 2 ounces of whole Cascade hops and extended the boil by 10 minutes. A beer to love and one that will be brewed frequently at my house. Great kit!

LOVE IT
This was my first real batch of beer that I have ever made, and let me tell you I am very happy with the results. I love my hops and this does not disappoint. Easy to make and tastes great! Your friends wont believe you actually made this yourself.

Drink this soon after bottle conditioning.
You and your house will smell intensely of hops!

One pack of WY1056 yeast. 10 days at 65F, 10 days at 68F, and 3 days at 40F. Bottle conditioned at 78F (a little warm). Fully carbed at a week and a half!!

Intense hop aroma was only there during weeks 2-4 after bottling. Tasted best weeks 3-4. Aroma dissipated and the beer was overwhelmingly bitter weeks 4-6. Week 6 now, aroma is gone but the flavor has mellowed considerably. Very drinkable!

I would recommend throwing them in the fridge as soon you're happy with the flavor. I didn't, and my hop aroma dissipated very fast.

Can you say grapefruit?
I tweaked the recipe a bit and made a hybrid of this and a Black IPA. One week primary and 2 weeks secondary with a full 14 day dry hop of falconers flight. I upped the boil to 90 min with the 2nd at 60. Great nose and definately lingers on the bitter buds!

A must try IPA!
This beer was my first IPA I ever brewed and I couldn't be more " Hoppier". Beautiful golden color, nice citrus flavor and aromas, and plenty of hoppy goodness has made this quickly my favorite IPA. Perfect for a hot summer day. Will most defiantly brew this again!

Great IPA
What a great IPA! I'm a hop head and I have to say I really enjoyed this beer. I will be making this again and again. Warning, my wife can't stand the smell of the hops when I boil it on our stove in the wort. Maybe I should make it outside next time.
