    Hallertau Mittelfruh | Pellet Hops

    46 reviews

This classic German hop has an herbal/floral character and smooth bitterness, making it an ideal choice for brewing lagers, especially traditional pilsners. Hallertau Mittelfruh is one of the original four Noble hops, and is categorized as a "landrace" hop, meaning that it grew and adapted naturally over time in its native region. Its name is derived from the region of Hallertau, the world's largest hop growing region, and the German word mittelfrueh meaning "middle-early", referring to the early middle part of the growing season when it's ready to be harvested. The majority of its oil content comes from Humulene which provides the floral, herbal, and spicy character. Clean, crisp, and perfect for your next pilsner or hoppy lager. With a substantially higher oil and resin content, LupuLN2 powder offers up all the flavor and aroma of a heavily hopped beer, but with a significanly reduced grassy character. Additionally, the lower dosage rate of the concentrated powder reduces the volume of trub and therefore, kettle loss. Using Cryo Hops® you will net more beer that is clearer! Typical usage of Cryo Hops® would be roughly 50% of pellets. LupuLN2 powder can be used in any application where traditional hop products are utilized, including: Bittering, Kettle, Whirlpool and even direct to the fermentor.  It is suggested that you use Cryo Hops® as late additions, in the whirlpool or dry hop, as the volatile aromatic compounds will be driven off if added early in the boil. Cryo Hops® are an innovative hop product that is made by separating the lupulin from the hop flower using cryogenic processing. The result is a product with twice the potency of T90 pellets, with reduced astringency and vegetative material. Note: These hops come pelletized. The powder is compressed into pellet form to make handling easier. • Pellet Hops - Strata - PLACEHOLDER Pellet Hops - Strata - PLACEHOLDER

    Strata | Pellet Hops

    6 reviews

We think Strata is the next amazing aroma hop. Our hop buyer Marcus was super high on this hop from the first sniff. Then Vito did hop selection in 2019 and came back raving about this hop. Now that we have had it in several commercial beers, everyone at MoreBeer! is loving it. One of the first commercial beers that made us go "wow" was Stratadust from Barebottle brewery in San Francisco. Another was New School Kicks from the Imperiale Beer Project. We've all had a million Citra® and Mosaic® beers the last couple of years and while those hops are amazing, and we'll drink them any day of the week, we are ready for something new and we think Strata will be in the same echelon. At its core Stata is an IPA/Session-IPA/Pale Ale hop with many layers of different fruit flavors, dried and fresh, anchored with a dried chili-cannabis-funk. Yeah, take that in. The grower, Indie Hops, says Strata does not have any diesel, machine oil, or catty ‘baggage’. Since we are not huge on machine oil in our beer, that is a bonus. Late hot side additions bring out layers of rounded-tropical plus bright-fresh fruit flavors; dry hopping yields more grapefruit and cannabis. We think the tropical fruit that we all kind of love, along with other interesting complexities, is what makes this hop shine. We also dig that this amazing hop is coming out of Oregon from a hop company appropriately named Indie Hops. When hops were in short supply some hop growers in Yakima, the old school hop epicenter, shunned us. They would only sell direct to breweries or in their own packaging where they could make full markup. We met Indie Hop Growers 10 years ago and these guys are laid back, super cool, and always supported MoreBeer! For many years Sabro™ brand HBC 438 has been unofficially referred to as Ron Mexico due to its native US neomexicanus hop heritage, and was once one of the more difficult hops to get your hands on. It developed such a huge cult following in the brewing community that you can trace the recent boom in available neomexicanus hop varieties back to HBC 438. Sabro is notable for its complexity of fruity and citrus flavors. It imparts distinct tangerine, coconut, tropical fruit, and stone fruit aromas, with hints of cedar, mint, and cream. Sabro’s pedigree is the result of a unique cross pollination of a female neomexicanus hop. With a robust brewing performance, Sabro proves to be a strongly expressive hop that translates its flavor incredibly well into beer. Vinnie of Russian River Brewing once used this hop in an experimental beer brewed for the National Homebrewers Conference, which was an absolute hit. We recently toured Russian River's new Windsor brewery with Vinnie, and he still raves about this hop and will happily talk about the origin of the Ron Mexico alias with a Cheshire grin on his face. We think you'll absolutely love this hop for brewing juicy, tropical pale ales and IPAs!       Sabro™  is a  trademark owned by Hop Breeding Company, LLC

Frequently Asked Questions

Beer Hops For Brewing Collection Article +

Leaf vs Pellet Hops Which hops to brew with in your upcoming batch of IPA can be a fun yet daunting choice with all the amazing brewing hops on the market today. Couple that with the choice of using either Pellet Hops or whole cone hops even furthers the decision tree or should I say bine. Don’t worry, we won’t let your thoughts boil over in the process. Ok enough with the puns, let’s hop (last one I swear) into the differences between hop pellets and whole hops. Whole Cone Hops Let’s start with whole hops also called “whole cone” or “whole leaf” as they are the first product in the refining process to making pellet hops. If you’re into purity and think less is more than you can’t get much less refined than whole cone hops with the exception of freshly harvested wet hops of course. Many commercial breweries like Sierra Nevada insist on only using whole hops in their beers. So there is something definitely to be said by this choice. But let’s explore further and looks at some of the advantages and disadvantages of using whole cone hops. Advantages: They retain more of their volatile oils due to less processing (Better aroma?) They do not break up into sludge in the kettle or fermenter (Easier to clean and less organic material in your wort or finished beer?) Disadvantages: They have slightly less utilization efficiency (10-15%) due to the lupulin glands not being finely ground. They are less compacted and take up more storage space They can be harder to fit into the small neck of carboys or small openings on conical fermenters They tend to float on the surface of wort/beer leading to less efficiency/extraction T-90 Hop Pellets Essentially T-90 Hops contain more overall vegetal matter due to how they are processed. Speaking of processing, that’s the big difference between whole and pellet hops. Pellet hops go through further processing after being harvested and dried. They get ground into a fine powder and then pushed through a heated extrusion die, turning them into a pellet. This refinement process creates some advantages and disadvantages over whole cone hops. Advantages Many more varietals available due to more brewers/breweries using them (You will see why as we continue) They oxidize slower and thus stay fresher longer They take up less storage space They are easier to pour into the small neck of carboys or small openings on conical fermenters They have slightly higher utilization efficiency (10-15%) due to the lupulin glands being ground. Disadvantages: They break up into sludge in the kettle or fermenter (Harder to clean and more organic material in your wort or finished beer?) They have less volatile oils due to more processing (Less aroma?) As you can see both pellet and whole hops have their advantages and disadvantages. I don’t think one could say “I only use…” type of hops. But it’s important to know the differences when crafting your beer recipe.

How should I store my hops? +

Store them in the freezer in their original oxygen barrier packaging. If you open the hops try to remove all air from the bag and store hop bag in zip lock back in the freezer. Other ways to store hops such as using vacuum sealers or vacuum jars are great but require the purchase of additional equipment and supplies.

Whats Difference Between Leaf Hops and Pellet Hops? +

Whole cone hops (also called whole leaf hops) are the dried cone flowers from the female hop plant. Pellet hops are the same flowers that have been ground up and pushed through a heated extrusion die, turning them into a pellet.
