Yeast starters offer higher cell counts at the time the yeast is pitched, leading to faster, healthier fermentations and better tasting beer!
This kit contains everything you need for making your own yeast starter in package. When you’re ready to make the move from direct pitching your yeast to making a proper starter, this kit is a great way to get going.
The most common size used to make starters using White Labs brand yeast. Same as our Y300 Starter Kit, but with a 1000ml Erlenmeyer flask instead of the 500ml.
In the lab world, these flasks are known as "Student Grade," meaning there may be some cosmetic flaws in the glass, and the volume measurements are approximate due to variations in the thickness of the glass walls of the flask. This makes it a great flask for making yeast starters--at a great price!
We do not recommend the use of an electric element with these flasks. If this cannot be avoided, we suggest using a larger pot as a hot water bath on the stove.
Bought a stir plate but the 2000ml is a bit wonky. This kit supplied everything and the 1000ml sits better in the base. For 5 gal pitches this has worked really well.
Great for 5 gallon or less starters with low to medium gravity
If you're looking to get going with yeast starters, this is your kit. If you plan to brew more than 5 gallon or beer with OG's above 1.060, you might want to get the 2 liter version of this. Getting both give you room to grow and incrementally step up yeast cultures, however.
Any beer with an OG over 1.050 would benefit from a starter. It gives your yeast a nice running start before pitching into the wort. I love the 1000 ml size to make one pint starters for my session strength beers and two pint starters for beers in the 1.060-1.070 range.
The kit was as advertized. I used the starter a few times for lager but didn't see any difference than when I used just one current date smash pak of Wyeast or White labs liquid yeast. It works great if you want to reuse your yeast though.
I'm an avid listener to the brewing network. I have been sold on how important a controlled fermentation is. I bought this and started pitching the correct amount of yeast, and what do you know? An immediate improvement in my homebrew.
I was intimidated to begin making starters, but this was an affordable way for me to try it out. I use it for almost every brew now. I do not use a stir plate, I just swirl regularly. Making starters with this flask has made a huge difference in my fermentations. I will likely upgrade to a larger flask and stir plate at some point.
Using yeast starters really ups your brewing game. No better way to get started than with this kit. Everything you need to start growing yeast for healthy active fermentations.
Broke the first one via thermal shock. Ordered another from More Beer for 1/2 the cost of the original. Still using today. Will likely upgrade to larger volume soon.
Had I known then what I know now, I would have gotten a larger flask. I never use smaller than a 2000ml flask, usually a 5000ml flask for starters. There's nothing wrong with the quality, I would just recommend starting out with a 2000ml flask.
I used this starter kit for a long time before upgrading to a larger flask (2000ml) and a stir plate. Has everything you need to start making better beer using a starter for your yeast.
This is definitely a good starting point for yeast starters. I love it! Add a stir plate and you will really be in business. Making yeast starters has definitely improved my beers.
It's a big difference from direct pitch to making proper starters. For five gallon batches this is good, though i honestly find it much easier to use a sauce pan and a whisk to mix the DME properly. A drop of defoamer helps a lot too.
I bought this kit to increase my understanding about the need to create a yeast starter for better brewing and it exceeded my expectations. It was great to have everythiign I needed right there in the kit and it has helped the quality of my brewing.
The "kit" isn't really what you need; it's just a flask, some nutrients, and a bag of extract. Definitely I would buy the 2L flask and save up for a sir plate. After using them, results are night and day different from this kit. You can always just fill the 2L one halfway. After getting a 2L flask, I think I've only used the 1L once: when I was brewing a mead and beer on the same day with different yeasts.
Nice kit to improve your yeast additions. Consider also getting a 2L erlenmeyer flask for producing large-enough starter to go along with this, and a stir plate to speed up yeast growth.
This is the perfect way to enter the world of yeast starters. The quality of the flask is great and it has really improved the quality of my beer. All you need to add is a stir plate.
Great for the early brewer that is just wading into the deep end of brewing. I would recommend going with a 2L instead of this one. Higher OG beers will benefit from a larger starter.
Using this handy kit allows me to make a yeast starter one to two days before brew, and in most cases fermentation is fully underway in less than 8 hours instead of the 24 hours without a yeast starter. Result? Less chance of spoilage and a cleaner beer with fewer off flavors, and because fermentation starts right away, less time until you're ready to bottle!
We are very pleased with this kit. It has allowed us to experience Blow-off! I feel the fermentation is greatly enhanced by propagating the liquid yeast overnight. We continue to brew better beer, hands down!
(Stir plate in manufacturing stage, Un-finished, like our 15.5 gal sanke mash tun!)
