A few years age we had a competition in our Concord showroom for the best Holiday Beer. The winner was an unknown brewer named Kyle Sommers. We actually hired Kyle following the competition to work in our customer service office(see where good homebrew will get you!) In 2010 Kyle graduated from the Siebel Institute to continue his dream of becoming a professional Brewmaster. He is now brewing at Lagunitas

We loved the big body, rich malt, and the extremely complex spice blend. When we went to make the recipe for sale we thought twice because we had to buy out the spice section of our local grocer. Spices include small amounts of All-Spice, Cloves, Nutmeg, Saigon Cinnamon, and Ginger. Based on a Northern English style Brown Ale, it has 6 different spices added at two different times in the brewing and fermentation process, resembling and inspired by a Belgian-style winter beer. This winter warmer will make your kitchen smell like Thanksgiving Day at Grandma's house. With some added Belgian brown sugar to counter-balance the spice and add some alcohol content, this is a great way to top off your Holiday adventures by the fireside. If you are a firm believer in the Reinheitsgebot (no spices, sugar, etc.), this is not the beer for you!

Kyle suggests using White Labs English Ale yeast, WLP002

Tasty winter brew
I was a bit skeptical with his brew because I don't particularly like spice in my beer. I have to say it came out great. I was nervous when I first opened it because it had a very odiferous smell, but the taste is definitely more subtle. Overall, great recipe Kyle!

This will be gone before I know it
Brewed on Aug 20. One week in the primary, month-and-a-half in secondary, tasted yesterday (Nov 8). SG of 1.074 and FG of 1.020. Great holiday ale. Reminds me a bit of Marin Brewing Co's Hoppy Holidaze. At racking I was worried the bitter orange peel was too strong, but with time it has mellowed and now the spices blend together with nothing really sticking out. Great bang for your buck considering how easy it was to brew. Highly recommend if you're looking for something different for the holidays and you enjoy spiced beers!

We will see....
After reading about this beer I just had to try it. I just got done brewing it today. I used 2 packs of Safale S-04 dry yeast for the higher gravity. My original gravity was 1.068. I will ferment at 68 degrees. I will also follow the recipe and add the Coriander Seed and Bitter Orange Peel after 7 days. In the meantime, I will place the Coriander Seed and Bitter Orange Peel in a small jar and add some Knob Creek Bourbon so I don't take a chance on adding any infections to my beer. Wish me luck. I will update my post once everything is done. I'm thinking sometime in the first week of December.
