Description

  • Automatically release pressure inside your fermenter during pressure fermentations
  • Regulate beer flow during pressurized transfers from fermenter to keg
  • Large triple scale pressure gauge with extended 0-40 PSI pressure range
  • Diaphragm spunding valves offer higher accuracy compared to spring & poppet spunding valves
  • Comes complete with ball lock QD, Duotight adapter, tee, and rigid joiners

With this complete kit you'll be ready to use the Blow Tie Spunding Valve right out of the box. The BlowTie is used to release excess pressure on a pressurized fermenter or from a receiving keg during pressure transfers. This diaphragm spunding valve is much more accurate than the spring and poppet style, and works much better at lower pressures.

Pressure Fermentation
Pressure fermentation is becoming more and more popular at the homebrew level, but in order to do it safely and accurately, you need a way to release excess pressure. You'll pressurize your vessel to your desired psi, but once fermentation begins and those hungry, active yeast start creating CO2, the pressure inside the vessel will increase. Attach a spunding valve and set it to your desired pressure, and it will blow off when the pressure gets to high and close up again when it's back to your desired psi.

Pressure Transfers
Even if you don't have a pressurizable fermenter, you may have done pressure transfers from keg to keg during filtering or after fining. During pressure transfers, it's a good idea to have a bit of head pressure in the receiving keg, especially if you're transferring beer that is already carbonated. Having a spunding valve in place will allow you to consistently control the head pressure and give you more consistent results, without losing carbonation in the process.

Diaphragm vs. Poppet
With the poppet style spunding valve, a spring pushes against a poppet to keep the valve closed. When the poppet lifts up to open, the surface area the gas pushes against becomes larger, and the spring has to work harder to push the poppet down and reseal the valve. This can lead to more gas being released than intended, and the remaining pressure in your vessel may be at a lower psi than your spunding valve’s set psi.

Instead of a poppet, the spring inside the BlowTie pushes against a diaphragm, which has an immensely larger surface area. This means the surface area that the gas pushes against while the diaphragm is closed is significantly closer to the surface area it pushes against when the diaphragm is open. This leads to higher accuracy, and the remaining pressure after excess gas is released will be much closer to your set blow off pressure.

Kit Includes:

  • BlowTie
  • Pressure Gauge (0-40 psi)
  • Ball Lock Disconnect
  • Duotight Tee & Flared Duotight Fitting
  • 2x Lengths of EVABarrier 8mm OD Tubing

How should the pressure gauge be cleaned? Is it ok to soak in cleaning solution?
Matthew Reardon on Aug 7, 2021
BEST ANSWER: It’s plugged in on the gas side, the chance being contaminated is very low. However soaking the connector in StatSan should be fine but not the gauge.
Why is my pressure fluctuating wildly? I set my psi to 10 on a clean corny keg before I started pressure fermentation. The last 2 days it’s been a nightmare. Randomly up to 30psi, blow outs through the spunding valve, it’s been a bad first experience that’s for sure
Richard Frame on Jun 29, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Make sure BlowTie spunding valve has arrow pointing away from the incoming (pressure-side) tube. Mine arrived improperly assembled.
Is this one way? Meaning can I use it as my airlock during fermentation, having it completely open letting co2 out? Or will air get in the fermentor?

Anyone else having a hard time getting this to lock on??? It wont click and almost seems like the wrong size??

Defective and Disappointing
As others have noted, the fully assembled valve kit comes reversed and will not release pressure. I also found it impossible to engage the disconnects without damaging the tubing. Cheap plastic everything. I have requested a refund and will find another product.

Maybe
Received this fully-assembled unit a few days ago. The BlowTie spunding valve was hooked up on the output side of the valve (arrow pointing at tube). One minute of frustration. But, many may not check, given it is already assembled. Flipped tube to other side, and it seems OK now.

Gauge at 4.5 PSI with no pressure on it. Yes, I tried "burping" it. No dice. I hope this all works. None of this is confidence building.

BlowTie or Die!
I have used a couple different spunding valves and even built my own. All of those, however, used the spring and poppet pressure relief valve. Wanting a greater degree of accuracy, I decided to order a BlowTie spunding valve. The diaphragm PRV makes such a big difference when trying to maintain a set pressure! Perfect for pressure fermentation. I wish I had gotten one from the get go!

I'm not generally a fan of more plastic in my "brewhouse" (garage), but in this case it's beneficial. I use fermcap to keep kraeusen under control, but it's no guarantee. If the BlowTie does get high kraeusen in it, it's very easy to clean and sanitize before using again. The duotight fittings make it super easy to take apart, and being unthreaded, easier to clean.

On top of everything else, it's a great price! It's not much more expensive than the cheapest spunding valves on the market, and cheaper than building your own. The performance is second to none. BlowTie is the clear choice when selecting spunding valves (at the homebrew level at least).

Works
This works, but don't expect perfection... It is a plastic valve that isn't as smooth as a metal one would be but overall it works. You will just need to adjust it so keep an eye on it until it's dialed in for the pressure you want... Would I buy it again... Yes I would

It Works
I have just gotten into pressure fermenting and it is GREAT and this Spunding valve works GREAT. The only thing that you have to watch out for is after taking it apart for cleaning (not the valve) is the flow direction it is hard to see the arrow on the valve.

Watch for backwards valve installation
Everything is fine with my BlowTie and it is working great, but I inspected it before use and found that the valve was installed backwards.

It's an easy fix because of the DuoTight fittings, but it's something that could be a potential safety issue if not caught. Based on other reviews, I'm not the only person who has come across this issue.
