Description

Most breweries and wineries use a large plate filter system to achieve clear product. Now you can do the same at home with two corny kegs. Our Beer and Wine Plate Filter Kit has a larger surface area, which means more yeast and particulate extraction than our cartridge filter, and comes with our plate filter, two disposable filter pads, tubing, flare fittings, and two flare beverage ball locks.  This kit works great as either a beer or wine filter, but you may want to use different pads depending on the results you're hoping to achieve

Each filtering session requires two pads at a time, and each pad must be the same micron to work. The beer or wine is pushed out of the keg and into the housing at 5 PSI, where it passes on either side of the filter housing, then gets forced from the center through the pads, where it is then pushed out into your clean keg. The rough sides of both filters should be facing each other on the inside of the filter, so the smooth sides face outward.

Each filter pad set is good for approximately 5 gallons of beer when the beer has been filtered by the previous size pads or you are starting with the rough filters. These pads are not designed to be back flushed and reused and should be used in one session.

I've used this filter kit for (at least) 15 years and I love it. I typically run my beer through the canister filter then through the plate filter. It really cleans up my beer.

I bought one of these filters a very long time ago, before taking a 10 year break from brewing. Is it possible to buy new seals for the housing assembly?
And are the filter pads I've had in storage still ok to use if they're still sealed?
Louis LeBlanc on May 30, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Unfortunately we do not sell replacement seals for this filter kit. We apologize for the inconvenience and we are glad to see you back in the hobby. Cheers!
What is the diameter of the filter pads?
David on Apr 15, 2020
BEST ANSWER: 8 3/4”
Can this plate filter setup be used with a vacuum pump to pull the wine through, rather than a keg and CO2 tank to push the wine through? I already use my vacuum setup to move wine from carboy to carboy, would love to use my same equipment.
David Peterson on Aug 25, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello David, yes it can! The kit is set up to be used with a keg system but you can take off the disconnects to use the tubes wherever you need.
Is the tubing ⅜"?
james derrick on Jan 26, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it's 3/8". Those little plastic quick clamps are a good safeguard as well. I've had the inlet line pop off and spew beer everywhere when it has a bit too much pressure.

Bought our first plate filter 11 years ago and still using it.
We purchased another as back-up in case our older one was disabled. Highly recommend this filter for crystal clear wine.

Nice idea but,
My experience is that it leaks like a sieve. Nice idea but it has some design issues. Plates do not fit well together and filters tend to slip and slide making clamping very difficult. Hold down screws fall out easy also making this very difficult to use. Once you get it together correctly, it will still leak , and you will lose a lot of beer or wine. Even under lower pressures, it still leaks and then takes forever to strain 5 Gal. of beer.

Barely usable without significant additional parts
The filter housing itself is fine and the filter pads work great, but you need to buy a bunch of extra Y-connectors and shutoff valves to make this thing work. Used as sold, this housing will destroy your beer with excessive oxidation. It's also impossible to clean thoroughly as sold, so you'll need to cut all the tubing and install disconnects.

When you're flushing with water, rock the filter 180 degrees from flat to upside-down until all the air bubbles are forced out. Otherwise a bunch of air stays trapped in the top filter. Then use shutoffs on the inlet and outlet side to prevent the water from flowing out as you switch the connection to your beer. Finally, clamp the housing vertically to a table edge instead of laying it flat. If you leave it flat, you will never push all the water out and you'll be diluting your beer as you filter it.

Daniel - 10 psi is the very upper limit of this filter and will likely leak. Please view our product page for instructions.

works well
This product works well for me (using the rough pads). It did start to leak when I put it to 8 psi, but it normally works well under 5 psi.

Does the job, Leaks considerably.
Got this to filter trial batches of cold brew coffee. Leaked pretty considerably, but might be due to the sediment load.

Polished the coffee right up, though.

Probably a Winner
I have used this filter on one ten gallon batch of Dry Hopped IPA that was cloudy. I used 0,5 micron filters. I put the filter assembly in a pan because I read about leaking. I was able to seal the leaks on the top but it must have been leaking at the bottom because I ended up with quite a bit in the pan. I will keep a better eye on it next time. The beer did come out clear. I will use it again. I don't know if I will use the 1.0 or the 1.5 micron pads
