IPA lovers rejoice. This exclusive Brewmasters Series kit was designed by Will Harrison, former Brewmaster for Hopunion's (now YCH) test brewery. Will also led the team that designed the unique Zythos hop blend for Hopunion. This is a MoreBeer! first in that the hops in the Brewmaster kit were actually designed by the Brewmaster. Wow.

The kit features the unique flavor of this new Zythos hop blend as it is only hop in the kit from start to finish. This recipe represents how Will brews his test batches at the Hopunion test brewery (small plug... brewery built by MoreBeer!) Will designs his beers in such a way to let the hops shine. That means base malt, just a bit of Crystal 40 malt and lots of hops, strategically inserted through out the boil as well as into the fermenter or keg for dry hopping.

Since this beer is all about showcasing this hop we caught up with Will and asked him for his description of the Zythos hop "I get lots of citrus and tropical fruit notes. The hop was blended to get a little of everything in one pellet. We went for citrus, tropical, pine, and spicy as the main flavors in that order. It also has some experimental varieties to make it more complex and interesting." Learn a little more about the Zythos Hop. Zythos Hops

Will Harrison studied at the OSU Food & Science Technology department with an emphasis in brewing. He became assistant and later head Brewmaster at the Wild Duck brewery. He then moved on to Hopunion where he has performed a variety of jobs including setting up their Hop Lab and helping start Alpha Analytics, a lab for breweries. He also designed and installed their test brewery (made by MoreBeer!) and was also involved in hop sales to Breweries. The test brewery was set up so that Hopunion employees and potential customers could actually taste hops in action. The brewery is also used to sort out and select hops from the experimental hop breeding programs that Hopunion is part of.

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

Very nicely designed!
I usually am unable to leave a recipe alone without adding or subtracting something. This is particularly true of single hop beers. I resisted the urge and left this one alone and was very happy with the results. Lots of malt body balanced by plenty of hop character.

Awesome!
This was my first home brew since the 1980's. Great result. No off odors or flavors like the old days. Two of my trustworthy friends have stated this is the best home-brewed beer they have tasted! I used California Ale Yeast x 2 and temp controlled at 68F. Followed the recipe to the letter. Into keg at 12 psi for 12 days and then ready to go!! I highly recommend this recipe. Next I will try Drake's IPA Extract kit. Then I will try the brew in a bag technique for a summer brew of some sort.

Tried Zythos IPA kit as first experience with MoreBeer and very happy with ingredients and outcome. Still drinking this tonight after 10 months and very flavorful.

Delicious!
My tastes have been leaning towards citrus forward IPAs, and this hits the nail on the head. You're not completely overwhelmed with grapefruit, and the pine notes take a step back. This is perfect, for me.

I like my "West Coast" commercial microbrew from San Diego slightly better still. However a 22 oz bottle of that is $5.99, plus tax, plus CRV. This Zythos is $1.72 per 22 oz, no tax, no CRV, plus the bragging rights of "I made this!", this kit is a no brainer even thought it is one of the higher priced kits. Well worth it!

Excellent IPA
To date, this is probably my favorite homebrew. It has great hop character, and just enough malt sweetness to provide a little balance. I would dare say that this recipe tastes better than several commercial IPAs I've tried. I definitely recommend it.

Excellent!
Very good, but hard to describe. Has more body and hop flavor than many IPA's, but not as much as an Imperial IPA. Definitely in my top five favorite IPA kits, that I make over and over.

A Delicious Citrus Bomb
I'm not a huge fan of IPA's..but this was great. Especially fresh, the citrus flavor of the hops was great, like drinking a beery grapefruit soda (it tasted better than that sounds) One note; be very careful with the hop sludge or you will clog all of your tubes and have to go to extreme measures to get to your beer.
