Dark Hill Porter is a tribute to one of our favorite west coast porters.  This Black Butte Porter clone, commercially brewed by Deschutes Brewery in Oregon, is one of the most well-rounded porters out there.  Being bittered with Bravo hops helps to initially balance the malty backbone, but that bitterness fades quickly, providing a smooth transition into the complex flavors of four different character malts.  This combination of Wheat, Carapils, Crystal 120L, and Chocolate malts create a rounded mouthfeel and chocolate flavor.

If you like dark beers, you're going to love our Dark Hill Porter.  If you don't like dark beers, this just might be the one to change your mind!

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity:1.050-55
  • SRM (Color Range): 27
  • IBUs: 22-27
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 5.3%

What is the estimated Final Gravity?
R David Williams on Jan 14, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I mashed at 152F and used Nottingham yeast. After 2 weeks it finished at 1.012
how long is the boil??? all it says it "boil last 15 mins"
Michael A Smither on Apr 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I did a standard 60’ boil.
This is by far one of my favorite Porters, and is a regular in my three tap rotation.
for the specialty grains, do you steep them first and then remove them for the mash?
Jason Levoy on Jan 10, 2020
BEST ANSWER: There are many techniques. Most homebrewers and commercial breweries add all their grains at the same time and the same temperature. Some brewers will add their darker grains at the end of the mash just before starting the sparge so that the dark grains don't get over extracted. There are brewers who have experimented with cold-steeping dark grains, like cold brewing a tea, and adding the strained wort into the boil.

Wicked good porter
I don't do many reviews but thought this beer deserved a review. I made this kit as required and added three vanilla beans to the secondary. Two weeks primary three weeks secondary and three weeks in the keg. I only make a couple of dark beers a year and this is the best one I've made in the five years I've been brewing.

Great value for an all grain kit
Your shippers included instructions for the extract version when I ordered the all grain kit. Also I had to call after 5 days since I did not receive an mail confirming my order. The customer service rep was quite helpful and my order was picked and shipped the next day.

Simple and Tasty
This was my first time brewing a porter. I've tasted a few other home brewer's porters that went wrong, so I was a bit apprehensive. This one turned out fantastic! My OG was a little low, and my FG put me at a low 4.1%. I pitched a single pack of S-04 and fermed at 62F. Fermentation was steady but not crazy. The chocolate flavors are subtle but there and there's no sweetness or any of that lingering sourness that porters and stouts can have. Had friends and other home brewers try it out and it was a hit all around. I'll definitely be brewing this again for the next cold weather.

Superb Porter!
Used WLP002 yeast and added a vanilla bean & vodka to the secondary, and this is quite honestly one of the very best Porter examples I have ever had. Almost tastes like it was carbonated with Nitrogen it is so smooth. It's an eyebrow raising beer by all who taste it. I will brew this many times more!
