Description

(Makes 5 gallons) Jamil brews more, consistenly high-quality beer than any hombrewer we know. He won California Homebrewer of the Year in 2002, after winning over 150 total awards at brewing competitions, 55 of them being FirstPlace. Of all the beers that he brews, the Chocolate Hazlenut Porter (CHP, as Jamil says) is the cult favorite and the recipe he is asked-for the most. It also won Best of Show 2002, several First Place ribbons, and countless other awards. It comes complete with 25 ml of Hazlenut extract and 8 oz of chocolate. Jamil recommends using California yeast, WLP001. This kit has a lot of grain in it, so you may find two grain bags useful.

This recipe is delicious. When I made it, I used half of the included hazelnut flavoring and an equal volume of peanut flavoring and it was great! Would definitely recommend.

This is a really complex recipe (that I've done before). It's easier if you all put it together!

Brewed once before, and it was awesome.

I've recently become obsessed with chocolate PB porters. I will likely add PB extract instead of the hazelnut.

Love Porters and with this combination it is a winner!

For the all grain version, do you mash with all of the grain or do you steep the specialty grains first, then disgaurd, like in the extract recipe?
Christopher Kerns on Jan 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: All at once. You want to extract all of the starch to convert it to sugar. Keep at it. You will love all grain so much more than extract. It’s intimidating at first, but becomes really easy
What is the total amount of grains for the recipe?
Joey Chenault on Dec 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: For the all-grain version (5-gallon), 10 lbs 2-row malt, 1 lb Munich, 1 lb Crystal 40L, 1 lb Crystal 75L, 12 oz chocolate malt, 8 oz carapils, 8 oz black patent, for a total weight of 14.75 lbs malt.

Really Tasty!
This was incredibly tasty. I did the all-grain kit with the recommended dry yeast. I missed my OG on the low side at 1.58 but, it was my first time with my Brewzilla. I've since acquired a refractory to continue the mash/boil as necessary to hit OG. It's under gas now but, was darn tasty at 4 weeks. It wasn't fully fermented at 1 week or 2 weeks. A little shake of the fermenter and walla!

Holy Hazelnut
Definitely go easy on the chestnut flavoring. I used 1/2 bottle and after months of conditioning in the keg, the flavor is still in your face. It’s a good Porter recipe but I believe the chestnut should be subtle for a balanced beer.

Solid bier, after a few weeks. (YMMV)
Solid dark beer. The hazelnut scent and taste is strong for the first 1.5 weeks. Let it sit for a while (if you can), and it will mellow out.

I only add 3/4 of the hazelnut. I also reduce the initial 60-minute hops a smidgen, to cut down a on the hop bitterness.

I ferment two weeks, then place in secondary (with cacao nibs) for another two weeks.

Force carbonate @ 35psi for two days, then decompress and add bier gas (75nitro/25CO2) afterwards for 2 days.

Nitro bier rocks!

Chocolate Porter
Turned out great, I tasted it while kegging and decided to leave out the hazelnut. Put on CO2 / Nitro Blend, and it's excellent.

Best Recipe to date
I have brewed this multiple times and its always a hit. Just go easy on the hazelnut flavoring. Start with a small amount and work your way up to taste

Over The Top!!!
Just to let you all know. This is now one of my wife's favorite recipes. This is hands down. One of the best recipes I have ever made. I have been instructed that it would be a state of time to make nothing less than ten gallon batches. Highly recommended if you like chocolate, hazelnut and coffee.

Delightful
My first all-grain brew. My son gave me this kit last Christmas. Brewed it in January. I bought a bottle of the commercial brew and did a side-by-side tasting with my son. Mine was a bit less refined tasting but it has mellowed considerably over the months and will now hold its own against the "genuine" article.

Perfect winter brew.
First off, this was my first all grain kit from More Beer, and I was very impressed at the quality of it. They even include a tablet of worfloc! and they also have some good brewing info with the kit.

On to the beer, it is a fantastic tasting recipe, I will probably try it again next fall though I will probably cut the hazelnut flavoring down slightly to allow balance better with the chocolate and roastyness of the porter. I used the Safale S-04 at 65 degrees.

Anything
I can't believe this has only been reviewed twice.
Full bodied, nice chocolate and coffee flavors, light handed on the nut flavor.
I have brewed this one several times, each time omitting the hazelnut and adding other things, such as vanilla, or cinnamon, or Peppers. Great Recipe.
