Description

  • Inspired by Alvarado Street Brewery's Mai Tai PA. A delicious West Coast IPA with a surprisingly complex flavor and aroma profile
  • Includes 100% Mosaic® hops
  • Estimated ABV: 6.5%
  • Estimated IBUs: 30
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

Throw on a pair of shades and button up your favorite floral print shirt, this ambrosial IPA is a vacation in a glass. Our Flamingos & Fronds IPA clone kit was inspired by Alvarado Street Brewery's Mai Tai PA, an extraordinarily tropical brew comprised of 100% Mosaic® hop additions. While technically a SMaSH beer (single malt and single hop), this delicious west coast IPA has a surprisingly complex flavor and aroma profile that perfectly expresses the versatility of Mosaic® hops. Take a deep breath and let waves of passion fruit, mango, and lychee wash over you while sipping a pint of Flamingos & Fronds. Close your eyes and you'll hear the wind lightly rustling through the palms as a flock of wading birds quietly gabble and honk in the distance. Relax. You've earned a break from life's unrelenting hustle and bustle, if only for as long as there's beer left in your glass.

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.060-65
  • SRM (Color Range): 3-5
  • IBUs: 30
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 6.5%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. I ended up with a lot lower ABV than the estimate and not sure what. I made this and I made the Pineapples & Palms, which are identical except the hops. Both started at 1.045 OG, so nowhere near the estimated 1.060 on the recipe sheet. Wonder why?
Brian Renner on Aug 22, 2022
BEST ANSWER: like Brian said, depending on your system you might get lower efficiency by the crush of your grain, double milling and recirculating your mash will help a lot at this.
Is this supposed to be a hazy beer? I'm still getting quite a bit of haze at 14 days even after cold crashing.
Townsend Haynes on Mar 9, 2021
BEST ANSWER: It should be a light clear golden color. I had mine in primary fermenter for 10 days and two weeks in secondary at 65 degress. Bottle condition for 10 days.

Amazing!
This is such a great beer! Brewed it for a wedding and was getting compliments from people that confessed they don't like IPAs. Ready drinking and flavorful!

Crowd Pleaser
Don't let the simple recipe detour you. This beer is a real crowd pleaser with a heavy aroma of ripe mangos. It does down quite easy.

Great beer. Crisp clean and easy to drink. Still have half a keg left and getting ready to brew again.

Mai Tai is one of my favorite beers at the moment and this guy tastes just like it! My only issue was for the first time in a long while I’ve missed my numbers. Not sure if it’s user error(probably that) or the xtra pale Viking malt which I’ve never used before. Either way, this recipe is money and I’m already planning a second batch.

New Favorite
We enjoyed this West Coast IPA, and will brew it again. Our monthly brewing cycle begins with shopping for our favorite kits from MoreBeer, and trying new things. My preferences are Pliny, Cali Mountain, Rogue and now "Fronds and Flamingos" tops my list. The "Craft Beer and Brewing" podcast talked about how people rave about the MaiTai IPA from Alverado Street Brewing in Monterey, and now I know why.
