A relaxing vacation is only a pint glass away when you have this Tropical IPA on hand. After the SMaSH-ing success of our Mai Tai PA clone kit, Flamingos & Fronds, we decided to keep the island vibes going with a similar recipe featuring a new hop. Pineapples & Palms is centered around the incredibly fruity BRU-1™ hops, a varietal that is absolutely bursting with the sweet, fruity aroma of pineapple. Used for bittering, aroma, and dry hopping, BRU-1™ is an ideal choice for single hop beers. With no specialty malts in the mix, your taste buds will cut right to the headliner hop. In addition to the unmistakable pineapple character, you'll pick up notes of pear, apple, and a hint of fresh cut grass. You've earned a break from life's unrelenting hustle and bustle, if only for as long as there's beer left in your glass.

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.058-63
  • SRM (Color Range): 4-5
  • IBUs: 34
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 6.4%

How should the hops be added during the fermentation process? Do they need to be in a bag or SS Strainer? What about sterilization? Are pelletized hops an extract? ( I have only used dried hops before). Would really appreciate guidance. Brewing this for my daughter's wedding to a pacific islander. Seems appropriate but it's important to have it turn out... Thanks in advance.

BEST ANSWER: I use a bag that I sanitize with Starsan and use food grade magnets to eliminate oxygen, but this is not necessary, I’ve also just dumped the hops straight into the fermenter and purged with CO2. I’ve also just dumped and all turned out fine. Pellets are dried squished/compressed hops. No need to do anything to them as far as sanitizing. The only difference I’ve noticed between using mesh bags vs dumping straight in is when you go to transfer, you can get hop material in your lines causing clogs. This is because the type of fermentation tank I have with a bottom drain. Good luck and don’t stress, it will turn out great!

Great IPA
This is a great IPA and is an easy beer to brew. Brew day was very straight forward and easy with the anvil 10.5. This beer for an IPA was an easy drinker most of my friends that say they don't like IPA's loved this beer. Low bitterness with a nice light pineapple finish.

Very tasty!
This is a very clean beer with a mild pineapple taste. The BRU-1 hop is awesome. It came in at 7% ABV from my brewery. The bitterness is mild to my taste but it meets the NEIPA style. I really like it and think non-IPA drinkers will like it also. I'll add it to my list of "I will brew again" beers.

Crowd pleaser
Smells like pineapple juice, looks like pineapple juice, tastes better than pineapple juice. A great kit for hopheads who want to sneak an IPA into their friends' mouths.
