Description

  • Packed with almost a pound of hops, our Heady Topper® clone is bursting with hop flavor and aroma
  • Includes Apollo, Centennial, Columbus, Simcoe®, and  Amarillo® hops as boil and dry hop additions
  • Estimated ABV: 8.1%
  • Estimated IBUs: 100+
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

Based off of one of the most exceptional east coast beers (in our humble opinion) on the market, this double IPA instantly became one of our favorite ingredient kits!  Our version of a Heady Topper clone recipe is packed with almost a pound of hops, and is definitely a beer that will have hopheads in hopheaven.

One of the first things we noticed when pouring this beer into the pint glass was the aroma.  With a dry hop addition consisting of Apollo, Centennial, Columbus, Simcoe®, and  Amarillo® hops, we weren't necessarily surprised.  Impressed is more like it.  A balanced malt profile helps to tame the bitterness, allowing the hop flavor and aroma to be the true star in this recipe.

If you're a fan of IPAs, double IPAs, or anything having to do with hops, this Heady Topper clone is one beer you need to brew!

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated OG: 1.073-1.078
  • SRM (Color Range): 9
  • IBUs: 110
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 8.1%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. To find our yeast recommendations, choose your preferred kit option above and then select the drop-down menu under “Yeast Options”.  For more info, click on the recommended yeast(s) below in the “You Might Also Need” section below. All included steeping grains will come milled.

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

Is This a sour beer?
Walter L.Doughty on Aug 19, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Nope, this is a Full bodied, Fully loaded with hops, Double India Pale Ale.
Very hoppy, very full bodied.
Does the kit include the clarifier (whirlfloc) and bottling sugar?
Alan Offstein on Jun 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes it does...but being a NE style IPA I would opt not to use the Whirfloc.
I want to get the Vermont yeast that is for this beer. Does it need a yeast nutrient to go with it, if so which one do you recommend since there isn't a match to go with the Vermont yeast?
Destiney D on Jun 9, 2020
BEST ANSWER: It is always a great idea to use a yeast nutrient especially with stronger beers. There are a variety to choose from. There are some good beer specific ones: the Wyeast Nutrient (AD321) and White Labs Servomyces (AD319). We also really like Fermaid K (AD345) and Fermaid O (AD332) which are typically used in wine making.
the recipe states that it is a 90 minute boil, is there any other difference from the "standard" extract brewing method?
KIRK V on Jan 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I looked back at my notes. The brew was pretty much standard. I had just started using an aerator to oxygenate the wort just prior to pitching. Was experimenting with the amount time. One big difference in fermentation. This was my first dry hopped beer. Turned very well in the end, and a very potent (ABV 10% plus) IPA. I think the recipe called for 3-5 days dry hopping. If you use a hop bag or rocket it will make bottling much easier. That dry hop puts a lot of mess into the beer. Don't start the dry hop any earlier than 5 days.
Does this recipe use raw white wheat or malted white wheat?
Vince S on Feb 18, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi Vince the white wheat is malted.
Why is Gigayeast Vermont IPA not a recommended yeast (although it is in the pull down box)?
Drew M on Feb 20, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Drew - Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The Vermont IPA will work perfectly with this style of beer.

Classic flavor, spot on kit.
This is the West Coast IPA you remember… I love hazies, but this is a classic style which this kit totally hits on the mark. Buy this and you will not be disappointed.

It is GREAT!
This kit comes with a TON of hops and they all get put to good use. I've never had Pliny, but this is a great IPA. Folks I have shared it with say it is the best I have made to-date. Not overly hoppy or boozy.

Exceptional DIPA
I racked to secondary to dry hop after 2-week primary. 3 weeks of carbonation in the bottle. Turned out amazing. Will be my go-to kit recipe for east coast DIPA.

Hoppy Heaven
Delicious beer with huge hop presentation. Light amber color with some cloudiness that may further clear. More dank piney hoppiness than citrus, but with grapefruit coming through. Only in the keg for 4 days now. Changing daily to the better with melding of flavors and better mouth feel as carbonation increases. I can't remember Heady Topper very well, but I think it was more citrus. Should be getting some soon to compare and hope to remember to update this review.

Best beer I've brewered
After several attempts at a big IPA, this one finally fit the bill.

Only changes I made to the recipe were reducing the boil to 60 minutes, and adding half the LME at the beginning, and half at the end.

I dry hopped in the primary without a bag, and fined w/ gelatin a couple days prior to kegging.

Clarity, aroma, head retention, and flavor are all outstanding with this kit. I'll certainly but it again.

Embrace the hops!
Finished product is a nice American IPA, fruity, piney hop aroma with a very firm bitterness and strong citrusy hop flavor. Very drinkable and medium-light bodied despite my batch finishing at 1.005. MoreBeer, you may want to crush malt a bit finer, as I missed my target OG by quite a bit since I do BIAB. SRM on the higher side. But I can't judge color against Heady Topper as I always drank from the can. I feared beer would be overly bitter due to missing my gravity, but it is on point. Used Omega British Ale V as yeast. It preserved maltiness beautifully while showcasing huge hop aroma and flavor. Excellent recipe and kit!

more beer "kit"
you should include a grain bag and a standard yeast packet with the kit . a list of available yeasts to choose from for the more experienced brewers .also directions for brewing are very general. a little more info for each type of brew would be very helpful.
