Please select from the following option(s) to see pricing and availability.
Pre-Milled:
Description

  • An extremely malty beer that really emphasizes malt over hops
  • Includes a single addition of Northern Brewer hops
  • Estimated ABV: 8%
  • Estimated IBUs: 19-23
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

This Scotch Ale recipe is a huge, malty beer with a deep rich copper color. Scotch Ales have a flavor a little reminiscent of single malt Scotch with smoky overtones and roasted flavors. With a 1.075 to 1.080 starting gravity and 24 IBU of bitterness, it is distinctly malty, but not cloying like some Scotch Ale recipes. Scotch Ale strains typically ferment well down to 60 degrees and leave behind very few esters or fruity flavors, emphasizing the malt.

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.082-86
  • SRM (Color Range): 18-19
  • IBUs: 19-23
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 8%

There are hop heads and Malt Mouths. And while I can go both ways I'm the latter of the two.

Scotch Ale
I first brewed this beer because I wanted a dark beer with low IBU's. Now I brew this beer just for the great taste and flavor! You can't go wrong with one!

Excellent and simple - pairs super well with choc-chip cookies!
Easy kit to brew and, with the LalBrew Nottingham yeast, nailed the Scotch ale flavor. I'm doing BIAB and I think I was a little short on my start volume (7 gallons instead of my usual 7.5)...as a result, the ABV finished at 10.4%. Yeah...drink two of these and you better be taking Uber if you leave the house.

Warning on the Nottingham yeast (see my review) which is the perfect match for this kit - it is super aggressive; start with a blow-off hose and a 6.5+ gallon fermentation vessel (or plan on mopping the ceiling like I had to).

This will be a staple in the Keezer!
This is an excellent kit, brewed it twice in 10-gallon batches, both times coming in at 11.1% ABV utilizing 2200 ml yeast starter. Great malt flavor and an easy brew day with only two hop additions.

Very nice ale
A nice “wee heavy” ale. I brewed the AGK version using a single infusion at a 153 mash temp, standard mash out and fly sparge. Utilized Edinburgh Ale yeast in a 1L starter. 2 week fermentation and 2 week bottle condition to first sample, good color & carbonation with solid head retention.

It is a bit less sweet than some other scotch ale's I've had but overall quite tasty and true to the style. Yes I would brew this again.

Sent me an all-grain kit with extract instructions!
Ordered the all-grain kit. On brew day I'm mashing according to the instruction in the package. Thirty minutes in and I realize you sent me the extract instructions. Mashed for thirty minutes at way too high temp. I take some blame on this for not reading everything before I start. For us new to brewing people, this can be an easy mistake. May make a big difference in taste. being new to brewing, I'm not sure. I'll try to update this when get a chance to taste the beer. For now, two stars.

Great base beer
I pitched in some of the White Labs High Gravity Ale Yeast (WLP099) and this turned out great! The flavor/aroma turned out more similar to a Belgian quad than a Scotch ale. I've found this a great base beer for experimenting with. I'm ordering more now!

Not what I expected
I expected more of this recipe. Very standard Scottish ale, didn?t get the body and sweetness I like of Scottish ales.

Great beer
Turned out amazing and I will be buying this one again. Great to have on tap to balance out offerings of IPA or Pils.
