The future is here today, and the future is HDPE Fermentation & Storage Tanks from Speidel. Made in Germany from nothing but undyed and food-safe plastic, these tanks are produced with particularly thick walls which preserves the aroma and the alcohol for a markedly long time. The stable carrying handles have been tried and tested for decades and are extremely durable.

Are you tired of carboys? Hate siphoning to transfer? Wish you could ferment larger batches in a single container? Sick of lifting 50lbs by a small metal handle? Done with worrying about shattered glass, injury and lost product? Well then have we got the solution for you!

These heavy duty plastic tanks offer a fantastic fermentation & storage solution at a great price.

Key Features:

  • Heavy duty HDPE construction is durable and resists oxygen transfer. None of the risks of working with glass.
  • Small footprint makes them easy to store - take better advantage of the space you have to dedicate to wine & beer making.
  • Built-in handles make these tanks easy to move, even when full.
  • Large lid opening makes them easy to clean by hand - say goodbye to your carboy brush!
  • All ports seal with gaskets and the vessel can be fully sealed for long-term storage.
  • Includes a spigot and oversized 2-piece Speidel airlock.
  • Designed and manufactured in Germany by Speidel, the makers of our legendary commercial wine tanks

Suggested Applications:

  • 12L: Perfect for storing small lots, making experimental batches and taking some of your beer or wine along with you to your next party.
  • 20L: Ideal for secondary fermentation and storage of 5 gallon batches.
  • 30L: The vessel for fermenting wine kits and 5 gallon batches of beer with plenty of headspace and no need for a blowoff tube.
  • 60L: Perfect for fermenting larger batches of wine or 10 gallon batches of beer in a single container! Only 4" larger in diameter than a 6.5 gallon carboy!
  • 120L: Ferment & Store large batches of anything - your creativity is the only limit!

Approximate Dimensions: 15.75in Diameter x 24in Height (w/out airlock in place). The maximum temperature that these plastic fermenters can handle is 140F. Approx. 17in Diameter including handles.

**Please Note - The handles on the Speidel Plastic Fermenters are capable of handling a weight load of 66lbs each, or 132lbs when using both. Therefore, they can be used to move this unit when full.

FAQ:

  • Can filled containers be carried by the handles?
    • Depending on the weight—barrels up to 30L are no problem—60L is the limit and should not be carried when completely full. The handles have a weight capacity of 30kg (66 lbs).
  • Is there an upper limit on the alcohol content of the stored liquid?
    • In principle, there is not. However, it should be noted that the higher the alcohol content, the faster the seals and, to a lesser extent, the tank itself will wear out.
  • Up to what temperature can the containers be used?
    • For short periods of time the containers can withstand temperatures of up to 80°C (176°F). This temperature should not be exceeded. For longer periods of time the containers can be used at temperatures up to 60°C (140°F).

Does anyone know how thick the walls are and does it seal tightly? Thank you.
vernon tafte on Dec 22, 2023
BEST ANSWER: The walls are fairly sturdy and the seal is great. There’s also a thick round rubber gasket. Doesn’t come with rubber cap bubbler connector though.

Speidels are great fermenters!
They well constructed, easy to clean because of the gig opens that let you get your paws in there to scrub when needed. Most my brewing brothers now use them. I like 'em so much I now have four of them two each 30L and 60L. Be sure to add the volume scale for yours and mark open and closed for the spigot, learn from one of my early mistakes!

Nice fermenter. Using with stainless adapters in place of plastic spigot. Modified the lid/strap with zipties based on a youtube review. Only negative is when the lid gasket falls out of place when applying or removing, but it’s a mild inconvenience.

overall nice fermenter
heavy wall construction, solid handles, love the large air lock

Only two things i would change:
The lid o-ring does not fit well ( I made my own ) keep falling out. this sucks when you are punching down fruit wines twice a day.

The " clamp band" falls off when you open the lid. the little retaining clamps do not work. need to find a better solution.

Better than stainless steel.
Yes it is very easy to clean and rugged enough to handle while full.

Fairly good tank with overly designed lid latching system.
The volume of the fermenter is exactly what’s needed for a 10 G batch but it has a few problems that the German designers either overlooked or weren’t familiar with.
Let me start by saying they over designed the lid, it has too many coves and ups and downs around the edges that makes engagement and the removal of the lid very cumbersome, tabs on the edges are too long. The black strap around the outside of the lid is the most aggravating latch they could have designed, you have to thread it between two sets of tabs and it gets caught under one of the handle and when you finally release it from the handle it comes off the track and you’re back at square one.
A simple flat lid with a 1/2” wide O-ring and 3 latches, 120degrees apart would have sufficed, but leave to the Germans to complicate it.
There’s no provision to get the strings of dryhop bags out from under the lid, I’m gonna have to figure that out later. My recipe calls for 17 oz of Citra on day 3 and that cheesy hop strainer won’t be able to handle it.
You need to drill a hole in the lid to get the temperature sensor thru, I drilled a hole in a 1/4” stopper and slices it vertically to accept the wire and it works fine.
There is no graduation on the side of the fermenter to tell you how much wort you have transferred.
Overall it does the job for the price and it’s sturdy enough but you need to brush up on your German vocabulary for choice words.

Works Great for Me
I needed a lower profile fermenter capable of fermenting 11 gallons wort to fit in my chest refrigerator. This unit fit the bill. I pump the wort into it on brew day, and pump the beer out when I'm kegging. It stays in place for the whole process, so I never have to lift it. It's light weight and large lid makes it a snap to clean.

There are two things I don't care for with this unit. The lid clamp doesn't stay in place when loose (there is a YouTube video on how to fix this), and the lid o-ring doesn't fit tightly in the lid so it will fall out if you're not careful. Due to it's design, you may not notice this until you spill sanitizer all over yourself like I did because this lid didn't seal properly.

All in all, this fermenter meets my needs, and I would recommend it to others.

Well constructed and holds a partial vacuum.
I have not fermented a batch of wine in it yet, but I have proved to myself it will hold a vacuum. This is important as that is the way I move and store liquids when making wine.

I believe I will be able to transfer/filter/bulk age and bottle the wine directly from/between these tanks.
