Description

(Makes 5 gallons) John is at it again! Since purchasing our B3-2050 Brewing Sculpture a few years back, John Maier has created many specialty recipes just for himself. And since his I2PA was such a hit when we released it, we asked him for another one. Being the nice guy that he is, he sent over one of his private, 2050-System-only, impossible-to-taste-unless-you-live-in-Newport, Oregon brews - Blackened Brutal Bitter! John took his production beer, the wonderful Brutal Bitter, tweaked it around a bit and added some Carafa for color. The taste is out of this world! Try it and let us know. Or better yet, drop John a line and tell him!

interesting beer, pretty good
I was expecting something like a black IPA out of this kit, but I don't think that is what it was aiming for. Has a good, firm bitterness, balanced by malt sweetness, but not as much hop flavor and aroma as an IPA/CDA. Still a pretty good brew, tastes like nothing I've tried before, so worth it in that regard. This is definitely one you have to condition for awhile...at least 3 months in bottles before it's good.

Ingredients were 9lb lme, 4oz maltodextrine, 2lb munich, 1lb crystal 60L, 8oz carafa II. Hop bill of 1oz magnum 90 min, 1oz cascade 60min, 2oz willamette 1 min, 1oz cascade dry-hop. OG of 1.074. Used WLP-001 in 1L starter, 62 degrees F. FG of 1.017, est ABV of 7.7% after carbing.
