Monster Mill MM3 - Complete 3 Roller Mill Packages
Monster Mill MM3 - Complete 3 Roller Mill Packages
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but the mill and the motor don't have the same size shafts. So, you'll need to buy a flexible shaft coupling hub that'll allow you to match the two different size shafts. McMaster Carr sells them online. Their part number is 6408k14. You'll need two, one with 3/8" diameter and one with 12mm diameter. Then you'll need part 6408k75 to hold them together. Hope that helps.
2 wires coming out , 1 black, 1 red. I assume black is positive???
Laurence cooper on Apr 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The motor uses and external starter capacitor which will allow you to set the direction of rotation for the motor which is nice. I didn't need to change mine because of the side the drive shaft was on. Because of this you will have to use the include box with the on/off switch or remove and use the starter cap inside if you choose a different switch/box to control the motor.

There are two wires coming out of the box with the switch / starter cap, red and black. The black wire is the neutral and the red wire is the hot.

Technically it will work either way but that is the way it should be wired for safety. In the US for 120 volt wiring white is neutral and any other color but green/gray is hot (usually black for residential wiring). Green or bare wire is ground.

The motor is from Australia, that is why the wiring color is odd. There black is neutral and red is hot.
The kit comes with a coupler for 10 and 12 mm shafts. Is 12mm the same as 1/2"? that is the diameter of my shaft.
John Simpson on Dec 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It is meant to fit any Malt Muncher grain mills. Technically, 12 mm is approximately 0.472" so it may not fit. However, there is some extra room before the coupling is tightened down so 0.5" shaft may fit.
The video in the review shows a control box, but the product description states there is none, and several of the other reviews seem to indicate relocating a switch? Please verify what is included, thank you.
Jeff Black on Nov 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You get the motor, two couplers (10 and 12 mm), and what I guess you could call a control box. The control box is just a plastic box with a push button safety switch on top and a starter cap inside the box. You will need to purchase a power cord to plug in the unit and I would also recommend a cord grip to secure the power cord to the box. You can buy a power cord with a molded plug from the hardware store.
What type of power cord should I get for the control box?
Avery Colomb on Sep 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I wired an extension cord to a junction box and brought in the wires from the control box to make the connection.
Will this fit the barley crusher malt mill? Is an adapter necessary?
Luca Prada on Mar 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I attached the motor to a three roller mill with a lovejoy. 3/8” on the mill shaft and 1/2” on the motor shaft. The motor is very strong, quiet and reliable. Get the switch too.
Does this come with a capacitor? Will it work with the Monster Mill 3 roller? (With 1.5" rollers, not the pro 2")?
Nathaniel Reynolds on Sep 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Nathaniel - The extra roller shouldn't pose an issue as there is still only one drive roller. Please ensure the "lovejoy" coupler is compatible, as this accepts 10 and 12 mm shafts.
Anyone using this motor to drive 2” rollers? I have the Monster Mill MM2 2.0 and wondering if this motor would have enough power.

Helpful hints for 3 roller mill
Put the 3 roller mill, base and motor together this weekend. Pretty straightforward but there are a few tips I would pass on. You need 4 6x20mm screws to attach the mill to the base. They do not come with it. Also the motor shaft and the mill shaft are 1 1/4” apart once the mill is mounted to the base. I was able to find a scrap of 3/4” board and cut it. Put two pieces on top of each other and they lined up perfectly. I used 1/4”x2 1/2” machine screws with washers and nuts to secure it. Take the hopper off when drilling holes for the on/off switch if you are putting it all on the same base. Also the roller gap can’t be set with the hopper on so either do it before or just pop it off after. Got a two line replacement cord at the hardware store to connect it to power. Not a hard project just required more trips to the hardware store than it should have if Morebeer would just tell you what you need.

Power motor for grain mill
The motor is great but it could use some instructions. Had trouble with the church and mill shaft not gripping and at first tried a screw but ended up drilling a hole thru the chuck and the shaft and used a cotter key hoping this works. Otherwise it’s back to the drill.

Love it!
Love this thing! So much easier than even using a drill! No more holding a drill at “maybe” half speed, blah blah. Turn it on, dump the grain and good to go! Assembly was easy, you just need a cheapie power cord from Home Depot/Lowe’s. I HIGHLY recommend the LoveJoy adapters as others have mentioned. The included ones are cheap and didn’t work well. If connecting this with a Monster Mill 3: I bought the LoveJoy Jaw Coupling Hubs on Amazon: LoveJoy 41450 (10mm), 48510 (12mm) and 37786 (middle piece).
Downside: the included clamps are not good (replace with the LoveJoy’s), and the mount doesn’t line up with the Monster Mill 3 easily (not really their fault). I made it work by adjusting the height with extra washers I had. Cheap, but it’s solid and it works.
Overall I’d highly recommend!
LoveJoy connections. See review for part numbers. Works so much better than the included ones.
Love it!

Malt Muncher High Torque Motor
Maybe a little pricier than a drill, but then you have a controlled speed that is just right for milling your grains.
Lack of instructions? Not hard to figure out. You'll need a length of wire for a power cord and a plug and you're ready to go. Am not an electrician, machinist, nor a carpenter so a high degree of specialized skill is not necessary.
Tools needed? A drill, a wrench and a metric Allen wrench for the connector on the motor side..
How does it perform? Oh, yeah. Have not tried it from a standing start with a hopper full of grain, but start the motor, pour your grains in and it doesn't even stutter. Quiet. Solid. Great performer. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.
Am using it with a Monster Mill. One of the other reviewers gives the part numbers from McMaster-Carr for the right size Lovejoy connector. The included key for the shaft needed a few swipes with a file, but other than the wiring hookup, nothing else necessary for installation. If using with the Malt Muncher Mill, the necessary connectors are already included.

Works extremely well
I set this up on a board with my Crankandstein 3D - powered through 24 pounds of conditioned malt with no issues. Wish I bought it earlier.

Great motor, saves time and maintains consistent crushes!
Great motor, I was able to couple this to an Evil Twin Roller Mill (http://www.thevintageshop.ca/products/twin-roller-mill.html) I already purchased previously from one of my LHBS. The 10mm side of the included coupler took a smidge of coaxing on to the mill's shaft, but it was snug and level. Wiring was simple thanks to some previous reviews (Jonas Larsson, in particular!) noting that the hot wire was Red and the Neutral was black. I picked up a three-wire power cord and wired it accordingly and used a bit of green solid core to go from the plug to the grounding screw on the motor (don't overlook this step!). Also picked up a cable strain-relief gland that fit into the switch box after I widened the hole. In order to match the shaft height of the mounted motor, I built a custom board to mount the mill 1/2" higher. Works like a charm, maybe a *bit* overpriced, but worth it for me and my 20-25 batches a season.

perfect motor
the perfect motor for the home nano brewery. we brew on a one barrel nano system (SSbrew tech) using larger quanities of grain. The bamboo board was warped on receipt so we mounted our Millars mill on a small stainless mixer stand on rollers. The stand holds a 10gal NSF white rubbish barrel on the shelf under the grain mill. The motor has plenty of torque and runs below 200 rpms giving us the crush we want without making flour. we are milling up to 75# of grain in a very short period of time.

minor issue
The motor itself is great. The kit could use some wiring diagrams. My spider coupling was terrible. Not even close to the correct size. I had to order another one 3/8" x 12mm to work correctly. I have the exact same mill/motor set-up as displayed.
Once I had this installed the motor-mill combo worked like a champ. Would rate it 5 stars if the spider coupling was correct.

Powerful little motor for the savvy home brewer
Perfect for my needs. It's relatively small and paired with my Monster Mill MM2 fits on a board that sits on just a single 5 gal bucket.

Wiring is trivial, but I do recommend installing a cable gland, it's easy and cheap and will secure power cable to the control box. Don't forget the ground wire!

The included coupling is metric 12 mm for the motor and 10 and 12 mm for the mill side. Do yourself a favor and order Lovejoy L050 hubs and spiders in 12 mm bore and whatever fits your mill (likely 3/8 inch if not Malt Muncher). They're like 4 bucks each and MUCH superior to what's included.

No issues grinding with the MM2 down to below credit card thickness gap. Plenty of torque for the average home brewing mill. A joy to integrate to my system!
