The Blow Tie Spunding Valve is used to release excess pressure on a pressurized fermenter or from a receiving keg during pressure transfers. This diaphragm spunding valve is much more accurate than the spring and poppet style, and works much better at lower pressures.

The BlowTie 2 features an integrated pressure gauge so you can quickly and easily dial in your pressure setting. The analog gauge is removable and can be swapped out with a gauge of a different pressure range or it can be swapped out for the Digital Mini Pressure Gauge.

Pressure Fermentation
Pressure fermentation is becoming more and more popular at the homebrew level, but in order to do it safely and accurately you need a way to release excess pressure. You'll pressurize your vessel to your desired psi, but once fermentation begins and those hungry, active yeast start creating CO2, the pressure inside the vessel will increase. Attach a spunding valve and set it to your desired pressure, and it will blow off when the pressure gets too high and close up again when it's back to your desired psi.

Pressure Transfers
Even if you don't have a pressurizable fermenter, you may have done pressure transfers from keg to keg during filtering or after fining. During pressure transfers, it's a good idea to have a bit of head pressure in the receiving keg, especially if you're transferring beer that is already carbonated. Having a spunding valve in place will allow you to consistently control the head pressure and give you more consistent results, without losing carbonation in the process.

Diaphragm vs. Poppet
With the poppet style spunding valve, a spring pushes against a poppet to keep the valve closed. When the poppet lifts up to open, the surface area the gas pushes against becomes larger, and the spring has to work harder to push the poppet down and reseal the valve. This can lead to more gas being released than intended, and the remaining pressure in your vessel may be at a lower psi than your spunding valve’s set psi.

Instead of a poppet, the spring inside the BlowTie pushes against a diaphragm, which has an immensely larger surface area. This means the surface area that the gas pushes against while the diaphragm is closed is significantly closer to the surface area it pushes against when the diaphragm is open. This leads to higher accuracy, and the remaining pressure after excess gas is released will be much closer to your set blow off pressure.

Set Up
The BlowTie spunding valve comes with 8 mm Duotight fittings on the inlet and outlet, and we recommend using it with EVABarrier 8 mm OD tubing (D1717 or D1718). You'll also need the flare Duotight fitting (DUO106) in order to attach it to a ball lock or pin lock disconnect. Dialing in your desired pressure is even easier with the BlowTie 2, thanks to the integrated pressure gauge. Simply start with the adjustment knob fully closed, then slowly open it until the gauge reading matches your desired pressure setting.

I'd like to use pressure to bottle but ferment around normal air lock pressure. Is there a minimum effective operating pressure for this valve? Could it operate similar to a simple airlock?

I ferment in kegs and daisy chain them together to capture CO2. My serving keg (keg #2) starts out full of sanitizer and then the CO2 from the fermentation keg (keg #1) pushes the sanitizer from keg #2 into a third keg. Would this spunding valve work between the 2nd and 3rd kegs? Is it ok for the liquid sanitizer to pass through it?

BEST ANSWER: The plastic used for the DuoTight products does not fair well with the acidic nature of starsan solution. Soaking these products in starsan and allowing to dry eats at the plastic used, and becomes brittle. Numerous posts in beer groups on FB have stated the product fails or breaks. The amount of time the starsan solution is in contact with the spunding valve could be too long and will prematurely deteriorate the plastic.
Can this be submerged and/or soaked for cleaning/sanitizing purposes or will it damage the gauge?

BEST ANSWER: I would not soak the gauge. However, it can easily be removed with 2 screws. In addition, the entire valve can also be disassembled easily for cleaning if necessary.
What is the difference between this Spunding In-line pressure gauge/regulator (FE-962) and the In-Line Duotight regulator (D-1047) 0-60 psi, other then the pressure range?

BEST ANSWER: One regulates pressure into a vessel, the other regulates pressure out. They aren't interchangable. I think the diaphragm and internals are different to accomplish this.
There shoudl be a kegland video on the ordering page explaining this.

Workd great
Be careful that you do not exceed the PSI rating on the gauge. I forgot I had pressurized the keg at 20 psi previously and wondered why the gauge was pegged lol. A quick pull on the keg pressure relief valve and I was back in business.

waste of money
First, these are not intuitive, you want them all the way loose to stop the flow, and tighten them down to allow flow. Second, the gauges never worked, I ran 20 psi to them, no flow, but no registering pressure either. all in all, a waste of money. Only gave it 2 stars because it does stop the flow, I just have to use another gauge to set the pressure.

Good but was defective out of box: Found my own solution
I was looking forward to using the Blow Tie 2 for spunding the IPA I brewed last week. Hooked it up on day 3 of fermentation and got no reading. I checked the Duotight fittings and tubing and they seemed ok. I opened the valve completely and there was no CO2 flowing to the Star San jar. I sprayed the different connections with agitated Star San and found a leak on the "IN" side above the gauge. I wasted several lengths of tubing trying to find the issue. No luck. The next day I found a video from Kegland on how to clean the Blow Tie, so I took mine apart. I found it had a manufacturing defect on the 4 prong insert that locks the tube in place. One of the prongs was deformed and the little piece of wire that is attached to it was protruding and scratching the tubes. Simple fix: swap the OUT insert with the IN. Hooked up again and no leak and reads pressure. Holding pressure for 2 days now. I like it but it was a hassle getting it to work.
