Please note: This kit is intended for use with Gen 1 35L DigiBoils (BE501 / BE502). It has a slightly larger wire support ring that may not fit Gen 2 DigiBoils (BE515 / BE516). Click here for the Gen 2 DigiMash Upgrade Kit.
Ready to upgrade your DigiBoil into a DigiMash? With the DigiMash upgrade kit you can convert the DigiBoil into a full blown electric all-in-one system. Includes false bottom, malt pipe with bottom screen, wire support, and malt pipe handle. Simply place the false bottom inside the kettle and install the malt pipe, fill with water and heat to your desired strike temperature, then add your grain and set your desired mash temperature on the digital controller. Once your mash is complete, lift up the malt pipe, drain the wort and sparge, then remove the malt pipe and proceed to boil.
Includes:
False bottom
Malt pipe
Wire support
Malt pipe handle
Malt pipe bottom screen
Installation & Use:
Place the false bottom inside the kettle
Install the wire support in the channel located at the top of the kettle
Place the mesh screen inside the malt pipe and attach the handle
Lower the malt pipe into the kettle so it rests on the wire support
Fill with strike water and heat to desired strike temperature
When desired temperature is reached, add grain and stir until well mixed
When your mash is complete, use the handle to lift out malt pipe and rotate 90° so the malt pipe feet sit on the wire support
Allow the wort to drain into the kettle and sparge the grain with warm water (165-175°F)
When you're done collecting your wort, remove the malt pipe and proceed to boil
Please note: only the 500-watt element should be used to increase mash temperatures when the Malt Pipe is in place. Using the higher watt element(s) with the Malt Pipe inserted may cause scorching of the grain.
BEST ANSWER:The Digiboil itself comes with a false bottom thats already about 1 1/2" off the bottom. The bottom of the Malt pipe hangs about 3 1/2" from the bottom (or about 2" above the existing false bottom) This equates to about 1.75 gallons of water UNDER the malt pipe while mashing. The malt pipe is about 1" smaller diameter as well. Add up all the water not in contact with the grains, and you pretty much have to mash at full volume to keep the grains under water. (can't sparge much since you're mashing at almost full volume) This results in a pretty low efficiency in my experience. I still like to use it sometimes because of its simplicity and ease of cleaning/use.... just don't expect to make any high gravity beers with it.

The height of the false bottom is 1 1/2 inches. The bottom of the malt pipe sits about 3 1/4 inches from the bottom of the vessel which is raised somewhat in the center of the bottom. So there is a gap between the false bottom and the lower end of the malt pipe. The malt pipe does not sit on the false bottom, it rests on it's top flange on the wire insert at the top of the Digiboil. Clearance between the false bottom to the top of the spigot assembly is about 1/4 to 3/8 inch.
The ridge around the top of malt pipe sits on the bracket (included with the mash kit) at the top of the Digiboil, the bottom of the malt pipe does not sit on the false bottom. There is about 1.7 gallons of space between the bottom of the malt pipe and the bottom of the Digiboil.
BEST ANSWER:The only thing I've ever used it for is to help remove the false bottom. I see no other function for it. I actually quit using the false bottom too. Unless you're using a bag instead of the malt pipe, or tossing whole leaf hops into the boil It doesn't serve any useful function .

It goes on the first false bottom. At first it doesn't look like it has the clearance. It winds up being the "pull tab" used to remove the bottom perforated plate.
I was thinking this would be a good thing but after first use I think I will have to put a brew bag inside next time. They should have maybe welded screen all the way around instead of having it loose. A lot of grains got through the bottom. Big Mess
Did exactly what I wanted it to do. Mash & sparge with ease. Grain column comes apart for easy cleaning. While at first the handle seemed a little insecure, in actual use it was very stable when lifting the column out of the wort. Easily removeable too.
Finally upgraded after using the BIAB method for a few years with the digiboil. It now functions as a low-cost all-in-one system. The mash upgrade kit made a HUGE improvement in the clarity of post-boil wort, but my efficiency dropped at 10 points from squeezing the bag (it still sits at a respectable 70-75%). Perhaps it will improve with more use.
With the release of the Gen 4 brewzilla, (and rising costs due to inflation), I’d probably spring for the gen 3 brewzilla if starting from scratch in the all-in-one electric brew system.
This is an awesome setup for homebrew. Definitely worth the bargain of skipping out on an individual mash tun. I’ve had several brewing partners (always brew with a friend) whom have worked for big time breweries and they’ve given multiple praises with this setup.
This product has been on back order all over the place. MooreBeer was the first to have it back in stock at a great price. I'll be putting it to use on my next days off.
Seemed like my prayers were answered when they added this kit in to turn that wonderful digiboil kettle into a all in one system. Parts seemed fine but I'm thinking the tolerances are off on mine: There's enough gap from the malt pipe bottom screen that I ended up having way too many grains floating around in my wort. Thinking I might have the local store check mine out to see if it might be defective, if not I'm going to definitely add a grain bag into the malt pipe next time, it's worth it alone to be able to hoist up your grain bag and let it drain, but I think 5 gallon BIAB recipes push the limits of this setup.
I've been using the Digiboil kettle as part of a 2 vessel MIAB (Mash in a Bag) system since last March with great results. When you offered this upgrade I didn't hesitate to order it.
I'm absolutely amazed at how well it holds mash temperature. I mashed at 152F for my last batch and the element only came on once to increase the temperature in 75 minutes. My efficiency was great too.
No bells and whistles, but this is a solid all in one system.
So far I’ve used the mash pipe twice. I’m a big fan. The step mashing was easy. No scorching occurred. Super easy to clean. Eliminated the need for a separate mash tun, which saves space and reduces my wife’s complaining about my hobby.
