Dark as night, the Shallow Grave Porter is the perfect beer choice for a cool, dark evening. This a big Porter with complex flavors of rich chocolate and caramel followed by a touch of warmth and a light malt sweetness that will leave you ready for the next shovelful.

When we say big, we mean big as this beer starts with a whopping 15lbs of malt. The complex malt flavors come from a blend of Munich, Black Patent, Chocolate, and Crystal malts. Cascade and Columbus hops provide a firm backbone yet a subdued hop flavor.

This BrewMasters Series kit comes from Jamil Zainasheff who owns Heretic Brewing and is also a Brewing Network podcaster.  Before he went pro, he won the California Homebrewer of the Year award twice, the national Ninkasi award for the best homebrewer in country, and hundreds of other brewing awards.  He has been a MoreBeer! customer and friend since the 1990's. One of his favorite styles of beer is Porter and he continued to perfect this recipe over many years.

Great brew i've made it lots of times, plus since I have a 56L stout in an oak barrel that needs topping off lots of times I have to keep a brew on hand at all times for this purpose...

Looking at the recipe, it seems with an ounce of Columbus will put this recipe well over the IBU calculation given. Never had the original version of this, but I'm assuming that the IBUs should be closer to 33 - 35. Is that correct?
Wes Idell on Dec 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The commercial version of this beer has a very sturdy bitterness, so it may be correct to use the whole ounce. Of course the best part of homebrewing is you get to brew the beer to your exact taste and preference for IBU. Cheers!

One of the best
Really liked how this came out. I cut the hops by half, per other comments, and it tasted great. I'd like to make it again but with the full amount of hops to taste the original recipe.

An amazing homebrew.
This is one of the best tasting beers I have ever experienced. I absolutely adore and will be making several more batches of it in the future. I would recommend to all my homebrewing friends.

Oh, it's dark...
I just finished this brew and I love the bitter taste. This was my first "robust" porter. It's like a bitter dark chocolate.

If I do this brew again, I will use a stronger yeast. I didn't quite get the ABV I wanted. Final was 1.025ish.

Excellent
Good recipe from Jamil Zainasheff. Taste, aroma, color, mouthfeel are all excellent. My only problem was that I left a valve open while racking to secondary, and spilled about two gallons on the floor :-( Sad waste of good beer. I plan to brew it again. I labelled my bottles as "Night Heron Porter". I like animal names.

Great Porter
3 stars given due to hops in recipe, noted below.

It's a great porter. Very balanced, on the high end of most specifications for the style, and it seems the recipe that pushes the styles extremes (while still being in range) are my favorites. I feel it is highly representative of the style.

The one thing I struggle with on this recipe is the hops. From everything I can gather about the original, the IBU range from 32-35. If I run the hops from the recipe through IBU estimation calculators it comes out to: Tinseth- 53.8, Rager- 67.6, well over the packaged beer's IBUs.

In my implementation of the recipe, I cut the hops to 0.5 oz Columbus at 60m, 0.25 Columbus at 30m. This still has taken the est. IBUs to 44.5 (Rager), as I was trying to balance between the recipe and the actual porter.

All that being said, the hops are a bit dominant and I feel that 0.5 ounce at 60 (or even first wort hopping at 0.25 and then a 0.25 addition at 60) would be spot on.

The implementation of the beer is still a bit young, and I would look for some of the bittering aspects to fade given a few weeks of age.

Great tasting beer but a little hoppy for a porter
All in all a good kit. I thought that the hop additions were a little aggressive for a porter. It came out a little too hoppy for a porter. I like hoppy beers so i am okay with it. I’ll order again but will reduce the hop additions.

Excellent Porter
Brewed this with WLP001 California Ale carbed at 11 PSI with a 6' line at 40F. I made one deviation from the original recipe by adding an aditional 1lb of flaked oats to add more body. The beer came out fantastic and is one of my favorites. The color is a deep black, the aroma that of coffee and chocolate and the flavor of roasted coffee with a smooth creamy finish.
