Description

WineStix are a new form of oak integration for wine, designed to give new barrel flavors with an extraction time similar to cubes. The combination of Short and Long grains result in amazing gradience of flavor similar to barrels, while extracting significantly quicker! These are Medium toast French Oak staves, and depending on the wine, will impart flavors of vanilla and coffee, while clearing out negative vegetal flavors and astringency from the wine. This is a two pack of WineStix, sized specifically for a 5-6 gallon carboy of wine. WineStix will easily fit through the mouth of a glass carboy, and can be attached to a string via the drilled hole for easy removal!

One carboy Winestix will treat 5-6 gallons of wine.

Hello, can I use the same stick more than once?
Kevin H on Jul 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: It depends on how long you leave the oak additive in the wine the first time they are used. I don't like a lot of oak in my wine so I usually just use one oak spiral or stick for 5 gallons, or 2 ounces of cubes (68 cubes) per 5 gallons of wine. The manufacturers of various oak products - cubes, beans, staves, chips, spirals, powder often mention how long it takes for them to give up everything they have. If you leave the oak in for less than the life of the oak product, yes, you can reuse them; however, the second time you use them it will take longer for the wine to extract whatever oak flavor remains. I often put a handful of oak in my fermentation vat (creates a chemical reaction) which gives me more complexity, better color etc. I do reuse those, since they have not been in the wine for a very long time.
Wondering how long one stick in a 3 or 5 gallon mead during secondary should be left in to get all the wanted oak characteristics without over oaking?
michael k on Oct 30, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Michael,
I've used these but as any oak influence you must taste the wine often. Make notes as you do it. Try 4 weekly intervals and mix the wine occasionally to get all the wine to make contact,
This is exactly how the professionals do it, it's not a secret.
Cheers

Phillip

Excellent oak products
Very easy to use and easy to work around when racking. Doesn't leave behind sediment to clog anything up.

Depending on varietal, I add these along with starting malolactic fermentation, then when malo is done I soak them with an SO2 solution while I transfer wine from malo to "aging" carboy, then rinse with purified water and place back in the new carboy for another several months (total about 3 to 4 months).
