Description

The blades fold down allowing for easy insertion into a barrel or even a glass carboy. As soon as you turn your drill on the blades expand to create a powerful stirring action. We do not recommend using in a carboy that is topped full because the stirrer displaces too much liquid and also creates a vortex that will send wine out the top. In these cases a hollow racking cane works exceptionally well. Works with 3/8" or larger drills.

Stirrer is around 2' long.

Bought this for wine making, but I also make beer.

Can this be used to do the whirlpool at the end of the boil? Will it stand up to the heat?

BEST ANSWER: Don’t use this for the whirlpool after flameout when making beer. The plastic blades will deform into curves. I had to take my unit apart, Heat the blades and bend them back into shape.

Works great on cold/warm liquids.

Great degasing tool
Degasing is important and not easy to do by hand. Using this tool in a cordless drill works great when degassing your wine in a carboy.

Great for mead
I use this for degassing mead during the earlier stages of fermentation. I don't know how much its effect is from degassing and how much is from a thorough mixing of the yeast into the must, but my fermentations have been 90% complete in very short times using this. (I have things set up to do this in an enclosed carboy, so it doesn't result in aeration of the must. If you set it up in a bucket, as is more common with mead, then it will also aerate the must, but I leery of doing that so far into the fermentation.)

With mead (don't know about wine), just be sure to start slowly with a few starts and stops. Otherwise, the mead can foam up so much that it may go over the top of your container.

Wish I bought this sooner
Previously I just used a bent hanger. This is a big improvement. Makes releasing CO2 a lot easier.

YOU'RE GONNA NEED THIS
I was shaking my wine before I used this just to see the difference. Man that is some work to shake 6 gallons of liquid. Besides that, I still had gasses in it and it wasn't mixed very well. I popped this thing in the carboy and in a matter of seconds the wine was degassed (I overdid it the first time watch out for bubble over) and mixed.

If you have a variable speed drill, which you NEED, start slow, otherwise you may end up with a big mess.

Essential for wine degassing
When it told me to degas for two minutes, I didn't realize it was going to be so much fun. I really enjoyed using this. got a little to anxious though. Turned the drill up to full power and ended up with a vortex volcano. Degas at low speed!! Then, once degassed it can be turned up for string.

Lee Stirrer for wine Batonnage'
This stirrer really works well, as it fits on the end of my cordless drill, and as it spins, make a small vortex in the 6.5 Gal Glass carboy, nicely integrating the fine lees.

Washes off easily and well worth the $29.00. You do need to leave a small head space in the bottle to accommodate for the swirling vortex...which rises about 1".
