Description

The future is here today, and the future is HDPE Fermentation & Storage Tanks from Speidel.

Are you tired of carboys? Hate siphoning to transfer? Wish you could ferment larger batches in a single container? Sick of lifting 50lbs by a small metal handle? Done with worrying about shattered glass, injury and lost product? Well then have we got the solution for you!

These heavy duty plastic tanks offer a fantastic fermentation & storage solution at a great price.

Key Features:

  • Heavy duty HDPE construction is durable and resists oxygen transfer. None of the risks of working with glass.
  • Small footprint makes them easy to store - take better advantage of the space you have to dedicate to wine & beer making.
  • Built-in handles make these tanks easy to move, even when full.
  • Large lid opening makes them easy to clean by hand - say goodbye to your carboy brush!
  • All ports seal with gaskets and the vessel can be fully sealed for long-term storage.
  • Includes a spigot and oversized 2-piece Speidel airlock.
  • Designed and manufactured in Germany by Speidel, the makers of our legendary commercial wine tanks

Suggested Applications:

  • 12L: Perfect for storing small lots, making experimental batches and taking some of your beer or wine along with you to your next party.
  • 20L: Ideal for secondary fermentation and storage of 5 gallon batches.
  • 30L: The vessel for fermenting wine kits and 5 gallon batches of beer with plenty of headspace and no need for a blowoff tube.
  • 60L: Perfect for fermenting larger batches of wine or 10 gallon batches of beer in a single container! Only 4" larger in diameter than a 6.5 gallon carboy!
  • 120L: Ferment & Store large batches of anything - your creativity is the only limit!

Approximate Dimensions: 13.5in Diameter x 18.5in Height (w/out airlock in place). Note - The maximum temperature that these plastic fermenters can handle is 140F.

Price and larger capacity than the Big Mouth at 6.5 gal. Some of the more expensive wine kits call for this size. I realized that too late--wine volcano! This should take care of that.

What is the maximum liquid capacity when filled to the top?
Brett Demers on Jan 18, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Well I have never filled to that level but I have 6 gallons in it and with the amount of headspace left I did not have use a blow off tube during initial fermentation.
Can (or should) you use PBW to clean this? Also- is there a manual available for this? I have searched the Speidel Website but cannot locate one.
Nathaniel Reynolds on Dec 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I clean mine with PBW and have never had a problem.
Does this unit include a threaded cap that will screw into the opening where the bung and airlock are inserted? I want to make sure I can completely seal fermenter if necessary in order to cold crash.
Douglas F on Feb 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes. I have the 20L and 30L vessels. Both came with a threaded cap with gasket.
What's the height with the airlock in place?
THOMAS MADDEN on Jan 23, 2019
BEST ANSWER: If the fermenter is 18.5" tall, and the spiedel airlock is advertised as 5 3/8" tall, there is no way the total height with the airlock in place is 21.25". It would have to be at least 23.75" tall with the airlock - which does not even include the height of the stopper. Does anyone have an accurate measurement of the total height with the Spiedel airlock installed?
Does this effectively filter out light? I'm wondering if this could be stored in a basement where there is a fair amount of ambient light. If not, is there a suggested light-proof cover for it?
Christopher Caselas on Jul 8, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I wouid always cover glass, plastic fermenters with a dark bath towel ect.
Should I choose the 5.3 or the 7.9 for secondary fermentation of a 6 gallon bucket of juice. What would provide the proper headspace?
Louis Volpintesta Jr on Apr 27, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Fermentation is very low in secondary so headspace wouldn’t be much of a concern. That said, I would still go with the 7.9 in case you ever want to do primary in it. I have 5 of these and I live them.
Is the 13.5 inch diameter measured from the bottom of the fermenter or the widest part in the center?
Michelangelo Alcantar on Sep 7, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello Michelangelo - 13.5" is a rough widest diameter. However when taking the bulkhead and valve into consideration, ~14.5" is a better number to go by.
If I suspect infestation due to scratch(es) on the inside of the fermenter (2 batches in a row with good fermentation that have similar off-flavor profiles, and wasted time/beer), is there any way to salvage this? Currently plan on checking by fermenting in a bucket to isolate the fermenter as the causative variable.
Jason Smith on May 3, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The way to save this fermenter would be to add boiling water directly into the fermenter and let that soak. The plastic will withstand the hot temperature and warm up to pasteurize it. Using another fermenter and eliminating this variable is a great idea to double check in the meantime.
Will this plastic fermenter collapse under vacuum? To degas, I stir and then apply approx. 25 Hg vacuum.
Jeffrey C Diem on Feb 21, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I’ve not put mine under negative pressure. However, I have put it under positive pressure up to 5psi. The fermenter is fairly thick plastic but it will start to distort around 5 psi. Hope this helps.
What comes with this fermentor. Parts list?
Todd Baker on Jun 11, 2021
BEST ANSWER: You get the cap and o-ring, the rubber stopper, the spigot and o-ring for it, and a cap for either the top or spigot hole, same threads. The smaller cap also has the same o-ring. I suggest getting a spare o-ring for the main lid, for emergencies.
Will this fit in the Cool Brewing Fermentation cooler Bag (with airlock)?
Stephen Tipton on Feb 1, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Absolutely. I did cut the ends off a small box and put it around the airlock so the cover of the cooler bag would not hold down the airlock. Would probably have worked fine without but what the heck!......
What is the width (diameter) with the spigot in place? I would like to store this in a 14" diameter stock pot. Could someone please place it on a counter with the spigot against the wall and measure?
DGGOLD on May 17, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Daniel - The width with the spigot in place is 14.5".
What size (diameter) transfer hose do you use to rack?

Definitely worth it but...
These are great and long lasting. This is my second Speidel fermenter and my original one from multiple years ago is still going strong.

A bit disappointed the price point on these seems to have gone up in recent years and MoreBeer now includes what appears to be a generic airlock stopper(white) rather than the orange Speidel one my first speidel Fermenter came with.

Extra headspace can be great for standard size batches and haven't had a problem with infections which can effect other plastic fermenters after multiple uses.

Just wonder if these offer maximum value as of 2021 with cheaper plastic options available now and some stainless options not that far out of reach.

Speidel Plastic Fermenter - 30L (7.9 gal) a great holding tank
These seem very study(haven't dropped one yet know for sure) and are good solid holding tanks for holding wine in for long periods of time. Easy to move them around compared to my other big mouth fermenters. A++ product. I have two of them now. Would have giving 5 stars if I had them for a long period of time and they past all he tests.

Very nice fermentation container.
Not just for fermentation though. I see a long-term use for storage as well as botteling. Clean up is a breeze with this bad boy. Size is outstanding. Quality is top notch. I am currently using three of them and I can't wait for the others to get here. I look forward to many years of use with these products.

Great tank to ferment
Great barrel. But only if you know how to use. Sounds crazy..it is. Usually the pictures shows the use of the spundvalve wrong. Plug the rubber or now it is a silicon from below in the lid , then press from above the plastic valve in. That makes it more sturdy and 100% gastight.

Das Speidel Bier und Wein fermentieren.
I used this Speidel fermenter for the first time last week, flew a trip to Japan and back and the Russian Imperial Stout was done. I have used glass carboys (heavy), plastic light weight (too flimsy) and the fermentation device is the best without have to spend hundreds more for stainless steel. I need another one!

A well thought out fermentation vessel. Easy to clean, large unbreakable air lock, transparent enough to see the contents, strong handles, much better than the pail.
