Description

The Ported Fermonster is a brand new fermenter designed specifically for fermentation. MoreBeer! gave product feedback for over 2 years of development and we think they nailed the design. The large lid allows for easy filling and makes hop or oak additions a breeze. The smooth sides are fantastic for sanitization - no ribs or texture to collect yeast or bacteria.  The large 7 gallon size was designed to provide ample space for fermentation and you'll find the molded in volume markers super handy for accurate filling. The punted bottom allows sediment to collect to the sides so that you can siphon liquid from the center.  Because they are made from vigin PET plastic they nearly unbreakable and a lot safer than similar glass carboys. Also notice the conical top which reduces surface area if you plan to store beer or wine long term.

These ported versions come with our plastic spigot (FE347), allowing for easy racking and sampling!

Made from heavy PET plastic, the same material used in 2 L soda bottles, which is nearly impermeable to oxygen penetration.  Due to the thickness of the material and the overall geometry the Fermonster does not require ribs or dimples for stability.  That results in a super smooth interior surface that reduces yeast and sediment buildup making it the easiest to clean, most sanitary PET carboy on the market.  The huge 4" opening makes filling a breeze, and cleanup is as easy as wiping down the inside.  The 7 gallon volume is a monster of a fermenter, reducing blowoff issues seen with standard 5 and 6 gallon carboys. Fermonsters are easily moved by hand or consider using our Carboy Carrier for even greater ease of use.

These fermentors are completely air-tight and the lids sealed tight with an O-Ring.  Additional O-Rings and Lids both with and without holes are available for purchase, see our You Might Also Need items below.

Has anyone had to use a blow off tube and if so what OD?
Michael Cundiff on Feb 25, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Michael,
I've had this fermenter for over a year fermenting 5.5 and 6 gal batches. With aggressive yeast I'll attach a blow off tube. Simply insert a 1/2 OD tube into the size #10 stopper that is a recommended purchase from Morebeer. It creates an airtight fi!

What size tubing will fit the spigot?
Ray Pirc on Jul 11, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Small, like 1/4 ID if you stretch it, 3/8-5/16 fits easily

Defective spigot, do not recommend.
I picked this up to use as a secondary. I leak tested it the day I got it, and the day I went to rack to secondary: No leaks from the spigot.
Once the beer was in, about an hour later I noticed a puddle under it. I went to tighten the spigot from the outside by twisting it, could feel it tighten, but didn't stem the flow. I took it to my sink, and my only recourse was to sanitize my whole arm, reach in there and tighten the nut on the back of the spigot: With little strength applied the whole back side snapped off broken in half across the threads, and I had no choice at that point but to let the whole beer dump down the kitchen skin having no other vessels (or hands) to transfer it to.
The *fermenter itself* may be fine, but I'd not buy one with a plastic spigot ever again: I'd recommend the non-ported one and use an auto-siphon.

I contacted Morebeer about this issue and they offered to ship me a new (plastic) spigot, but it doesn't really make up for the $80 in lost beer / brewday. Guess 'you get what you pay for' is true :(

I dislike giving bad reviews, but others should really be aware
of this before purchase.

Meh
Arrived with a big dent pressed into the side that doesn't quite pop back to shape. And, I have kind of large arms, and I can't get my arm deep enough in this to screw in the spigot, let alone clean it. The 7 gal model is quite tall. Other than that I guess it works fine.

Fitting leaks
Caution! Test your fermenter BEFORE you put beer in it! The spigot leaks both from the front and around the edges. Had to emergency transfer to my glass carboy but still lost about half a gallon before I could get it cleaned and sanitized. I ordered 2, and both leak. And yes, I used the gasket properly, and didn't over-tighten.

Good, but the gasket in the lid is a huge pain
So far so good with this carboy. It's easy to clean and disinfect and should serve well as a sour aging vessel for my mixed fermentation beers. The one issue is that the gasket is completely too large for the lid. They act like it's on purpose, but it's the most ridiculous thing. It's like a puzzle game trying to get it in. Plan on spending 10 minutes fighting each one and try not to kick your dog in frustration.

Great concept, just falls a bit short
I bought two of the 7 gallon fermenters for two main reasons. 1. the size, 2. the spigot. They have performed great for me in these two aspects.

Where they fall short of being a "Great" product:

1. Like many have mentioned, the opening, while obviously larger than a carboy, anyone with moderately sized arms will have difficulty in reaching in to clean all the way to the bottom and assemble the spigot. Apparently, they make a tool for the assembly and you coould use a brush to reach down there, but the point of them was to make it easy to reach there, not have to spend more for accesories to use them the way they are designed.

2. The spigot is great, especially for taking gravity samples and transfering to kegs. The issue here is that the spigot requires that you are very careful in assembling it, to ensure that it doesn't leak. With the square profile of the gaskets, you can easily over tighten and deform them. Be careful in aligning it with the hole in the fermentor, the gasket can catch the edge of the hole and deform as well.

3. The lid. More precisely, the lid's gasket. Others have mentioned it as well. It is so thin, and slightly oversized, you really have to be careful installing it and making sure that it seats properly. with the loose fit, it can easily be poushed out of it's seat when you tighten the top. Thankfully, you can see inside them once they are assembled and see if the oring is pushed out (I discovered this by accident, thankfully, one brew day when i tipped it over to empty the sanitzer.)

3A. The lid cont... One of mine broke. Perhaps from overtightening, but I only hand tighten it, no tools. The lid cracked at the edge where the threaded collar meets the flat top.

4. The volume markings. When I recieved them, I cleaned them prior to use and in doing so, noticed how difficult it is to see the volume markings on the side of the vessle. They were so hard to see I decided I would just mark them with a permanent marker myself, so I filled them with cleaning solution, 1/2 gallon at a time in order to graduate them myself. The resultant markings were off from the factory markings. Not a lot, and in the grand scheme of things, not a critical issue, but, again, if you're going to provide them, make sure they arre right, and you can read them.

Useless unless you have chicken arms
While the idea seems great, the porting requires that one be able to insert their arm into the fermenter to secure the spigot. Being a 7 gallon one makes it even worse as the reach is longer. The opening at the top is simply too small. I could only get my arm in to a point just below the elbow, nowhere near enough to reach.

So far so good, except the hole in the lid isn't round and I had to order buon vino stoppers in order to get it to seal. Not impressed with the QC on that.
