Description

Keep your fermentation temperature in check with the BrewBuilt CoolStix for Carboys! Temperature control is one the most important aspects of a healthy, happy fermentation. When your fermenting beer gets too hot, the yeast will likely impart off-flavors that can easily overwhelm the taste of your finished beer. The CoolStix is a revolutionary cooling solution for carboys. It is easy to clean, easy to setup, and cools quickly and efficiently.

You will also need a cold water source to provide the cooling solution. For maintaining ale temperatures, a cooler or bucket of ice water is sufficient in most cases. For maintaining lager temperatures, we recommend the Icemaster 100 Glycol Chiller.

For a complete kit with all the necessary pieces, check out the BrewBuilt CoolStix for Carboys with Pump Kit.

I had a 3rd peg on my brewtech chiller and wanted to get carboys working.

I was looking for a slim, cost effective way to regulate my fermenter temp.

Because I have the cool stix for my catalyst fermenter, it worked so well with my home made chiller, I wanted to extend the process to my carboys during aging.

Allows lagering without a fermentation chamber
In conjunction with a brew bag, the coolstix in conjunction with an electronic controller and a submersible pump works really well to maintain lager fermentation temps 52-56F. Would definitely recommend a PET Carboy as the heavier stopper keeps the thermowell and CoolStix separated and a good seal develops for the fermentation lock or blow off tube. Find that changing out frozen water bottles at least once per day makes the cold water reservoir last longer and the coolstix needs to occasionally bring the temp back down.

Works very well, but dry-hopping and seal could be better
Works well, especially with an inkbird temp controller. Was able to maintain 65 degrees during hot norcal summers.

Say goodby to easy dry-hopping after initial fermentation. For dry hopping I removed the blow off tube and used a small funnel to add pelitized hops, was a mess.

Also the carboy cover doesn't seal well, i used the tapered seal inside the silicone cover with some pipe clamps and worked perfectly.
Works well, especially with an Inkbird temp controller.

Keeping my brew cool!
Working with my InkBird controller, my beer has been fermenting happily for a week, varying no more than 2 degrees (F) the entire time, despite the outdoor temperature swings.

CoolStix
I like it and I hate it. Before, I put the stopper in and ran a blow-off or air lock and I was off to the races. The problem with this thing is the carboy hood. The holes in the hood are too big for just about everything that has to go through them. I was able (after initial setup) to wrap the CoolStix, thermowell, and blow-off tubing with teflon tape to make them large enough to seal the holes in the hood. I am using a small cooler that I got at Walmart. I drilled two holes in the front of it to accommodate the tubing, added enough water for the pump to pick it up and am using frozen water bottles as my cold source. If you use ice, you'll be constantly emptying the melted water. I purchased the whole setup with the Inkbird controller which works as advertised.
