Not strictly necessary, but useful.

Where this is useful is moving a full fermenter *and* the stand. I use mine so strap is only on the fermenter and then drop each handle down around a leg and back up. This way the full stand can be moved without risking a drop of the fermenter or potentially dropping/knocking over the stand and having no place to set the fermenter down.

This is not very useful for lifting the fermenter onto the wall mounts, especially if the lugs are shoulder level or higher. There really isn't a good orientation to hold this where you can lift it and clear the rails for taller mounts. For that, you'll be better off awkwardly throwing an arm around the lower part of the fermenter and stabilizing at the lid.

Always remove thermometer before moving, as it just begs to get caught on things. 6 gallons at an OG of 1.080 is around 55 pounds, and it goes up from there if you made a really thick must/wort (specific gravity * volume in liters = weight in kilograms). So be careful.
