Is there lead in brass fittings?

Yes, in small amounts. The law sets limits for the lead content in brass fittings to be used in drinking water to 8%. In a normal water supply the calcium carbonate from the water will line the fitting after a few years and stop all leaching of this lead. In a brewery the acidity of wort and beer stops this protective action and allows lead to be leached from the surface.
