This is the long sought after pacman yeast from a very popular brewery in Newport, Oregon. Homebrewers rave about the clean ferment this yeast provides for all ales. This strain has a wide range of temperature threshold from 55F-78F. We recommend fermenting at 64-66F for the ultimate experience.

Do I need to make a starter for an Activator?

No. The Activator is designed to deliver professional pitch rates (6 million cells/ ml.) when directly added to 5 gallons of wort. ( <1.060 at 70 degrees). However, if a package is slow to swell, suspected of being mishandled, or if the date is approaching the six month shelf life it is a good idea to build the culture up with a starter. High gravity or low temperature fermentations require higher pitch rates. This can be achieved with inoculating with additional packages or making a starter.

Please note that wy1764 has been known to bloat when shipping due to the yeast "off-gassing". Please put this yeast in your refrigerator when received, as the yeast will be fine and should still be viable. To view Wyeast's FAQ on what to do with bloated packages, please visit the following link.

Alcohol Tolerance: 12% ABV
Flocculation: med-high
Attenuation: 72-78%
Temp. Range: 60-72°F (15-22°C)

For best results we always recommend ordering an ice pack with your liquid yeast.

I've used this yeast before on a big Imperial Stout and it held up to the alcohol content. When I used other yeast it's been hit and miss. I realize there are other steps that could be taken but why if you can get a good yeast and plus this yeast is great!

This made a wonderful IPA that was clean and very smooth. I made a starter, but I don't know if I really needed it. The OG of the IPA was ~1.063 and this yeast went nuts and fermented very quickly with a huge blow off. I fermented at ~56F. It reminded me a little of Wyeast1007. The first three people that tried this IPA said that it was the best I have ever made.

Fast Fermenting - just like Pacman: chomp, chomp, chomp!
I am a fan of Rogue beers and always liked the yeast being used by J.C. Maier... now I understand where Pacman yeast got its name.

This stuff is a super fast-fermenting yeast. I liked the smack pack and followed the directions as listed on the package. I pitched straight from the (sanitized) bag into my fermenter. In less than 72 hours I went from an OG of 1.068 to an FG of 1.010 at around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

I can't say enough about this yeast and I will use it again as I experiment with different brewing techniques and recipes.

Clean and Fast!
I've used this yeast in a variety of beers from IPAs to Red Ales to Stouts and it's always reliable. Expect fairly quick fermentation and a clean profile.

I use slants and frozen cultures to keep it available all the time!
