Description

Chill your wort in half the time with the Convolutus Counterflow Wort Chiller, an innovative and water-efficient device designed to use with just about any of our most popular brew kettles. This unique counterflow wort chiller is designed to cool your wort in much less time compared to a standard immersion wort chiller.

This high quality chiller is made up of 12 feet of 5/8 inch convoluted copper, which continually spins the wort as it flows through the pipe. The outer tube is made of 7/8 inch copper for added durability. The Convolutus Counterflow Wort Chiller enables you to pump wort through the inner tube, while running cold water in the opposite direction in the outer tube, making the entire process quicker and more efficient than ever before.

Use ½ inch tubing and hose clamps to connect the chiller to the wort in and out feeds. The water connections are male and female  ¾ inch hose connections, and the coils themselves are about 6 inches in diameter. This counterflow chiller is also available with 1/2 inch FPT fittings.

10 1/4" height by 11" overall diameter (coils themselves are about 6" in diameter)

I bought this because I just upgraded to 10 gallon brewery from a 5 gallon brewery and I used an immersion chiller before. I just hope that I can final a way to use this counterflow chiller with an ice bath.

Will standard 1/2 inch copper sweat fittings work on the end of this?
Carlin Hebert on Jan 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I could not find any standard fittings that made a good fit. I had to take a piece of 1/2 pipe (approx 3 inches) and heat it up and flare it out/ sand down the inner diameter a bit. I also sanded down the outer diameter of the end of the exposed chiller pipe until i could get the 1/2 pipe to fit over it. I then sweated the 1/2 pipe to the chiller and then sweated 1/2 fittings to the end of the pipe. I would be glad to share photos. I know this sounds confusing. It was kind of a pain but it is solid now.

Easy chill and clean
Works great! I swaged the ends and soldered copper fittings on so I could attach quick connect fittings. I also have a Therminator, but I like this better due to the ease of cleaning.

It works, but very inefficient for $200!
I will say, yes ok, the chiller works but is very inefficient. The description says it is “convoluted” but I’m not sure how-aI look in the end of the tubing only shows a round opening. I thought the tubing would be flattened or something to increase the efficiency. Either way, this could be improved by just making the inner tubing diameter smaller. Overall it’s way too expensive for what you get and unfortunately it’s the only safe wort chiller for the homebrewer. “Safe” because the little homebrew scale plate type coolers can never really be guaranteed clean- I don’t think the tiny plate gaps are made for solids and some solids are inevitable.

Great chiller. Maintenance is important.
I purchased one of these back in 2012 and was extremely impressed with the performance. My HERMS system allows pumping the wort in a recycle mode, so I was able to get the wort very cool rather quickly with this unit. I also designed a recirculating coolant system that sprays used cooling water over ice to keep the cold side very cold.

After a few years, I accidentally got a slug of hop debris into the cooler due to a failed screen on my recirc pump suction pickup, and the hot side (inner tube) plugged off during the chill cycle. It was very difficult to clean, because I let it sit too long, and possibly due to the convoluted inner tubing. If this chiller is plugged with debris in the inside tube, I recommend trying immediately to clear it by any means necessary. Possibly compressed air would work.

After getting it cleaned, it worked great for years, until I neglected to drain the cold side fully before storing it for an extended period in cold temperatures. Unfortunately that was too much for it to survive. I would recommend fully draining the unit, possibly by blowing it out with compressed air, or storing only in areas that won't get to freezing temperatures in the winter. I had it mounted vertically, and assumed it would adequately drain by gravity, but it didn't.

Anyway, I liked it so much that when I found my old one damaged by freezing, I ended up buying another (actually bought the one with the 1/2" FNPT fittings (WC90A).

Best counterflow chiller out there.
Best counter-flow chiller you can buy. Cools better than any stainless steel model out there. Only way to cool faster is buy a larger plate heat exchanger.

Excellent counter flow wort chiller
By "throttling" the wort through the counter flow chiller the temp of the wort on exit from the chiller brought 5 gallons of boiling water to under 80 degrees in less than 5 minutes. My ground water tap water was too warm to use, so I was recirculating ice water through the chiller.

Awesome Chiller
Bought this because I was getting tired of wasting so much water to cool a batch with my immersion chiller. I live in So Cal, so the ground water is not that cold. I ended up using my immersion chiller as a pre-chiller for my ground water in a bucket of ice. This counter flow chiller can take a boiling batch down to 72 in less than 8 minutes. Love this chiller and never had any problems with it clogging. I have made huge IPA's with no hop bags or spider....no clogs! Worth the money if you have it.

Amazing!
This is my first chiller and it is amazing! I soldered on 1/2" female fittings myself and on brew day no leaks. I had well water hooked up to cool the wort and it brought 215F wort down to ~70F as it exited the chiller. Clean out after was easy also. Definitly worth the price!

Worked better than my Therminator
I was lucky enough to pick one of these up on the more beer deal of the day. Although I was hoping to get the one that already had the 1/2" fittings soldered on for the wort in wort out tube at the price I decided to pick it up anyways and attempt my own solder. I read a few reviews here where guys had issues soldering on this? I am not sure why but I had no problem at all. I am not the most experienced at soldering but have has a little practice and this job was a breeze. The only tricky part is that it is a 5/8" tubing so the standard 1/2" fittings would not work. What I found out was 1/2" copper pipe fit perfect over the 5/8" tubing so I soldered that on first and then soldered the standard home depot 1/2" threaded fitting onto that and it worked like a charm. I just brewed last weekend to test it out and had no leaks! The Chiller worked great it seemed to have great flow better than my therminator which always seemed so restricted. Also I feel confident that I can sanitize this chiller and not have a bunch of trub material left inside. was able to clean it out easily and had no hop/trub left after a good back flush. Unlike my old therminator that I could back flush for 30 min and still find trub coming out. I also was able to cool down my wort quickly to 80F in about 5 min. I am happy with my purchase and quality and feel confidant I can sanitize this chiller and not have a bunch of trub material left inside!

Works great for chilling wort and for heating mash in HERMS
I use this heat exchanger for heating my mash in my HERMS system as well as for cooling my wort before pitching. It works great for both purposes. For heating the mash it requires 2 pumps, however--one for pumping hot water through the outer tubing and one for pumping mash liquid through the inner tubing. I have found this to be a very efficient heat exchanger.
