This is a well made glass thief. It will still obviously break if banged around enough or misused, but it has enough thickness to it that it feels like it will outlast many other glass thieves used. The bend is perfect, allowing me to take carboy samples even from those that are in the back row and less accessible under a shelf about 6" above. Placing my thumb over the hole in the end allows me to draw enough wine (doing this two times) in order to do all my tasting and chemistry mesurement needs. It rarely leaks wine if my thumb is pressed firmly over the end.
Whenever it might be that I make the mistake of breaking this one, I will deffinately be back to buy another and will recommend this to any and all who ask.
I believe this are hand made in California (East Bay).
Do I wish it cost less, yes. But I guess the ole' saying goes here...you get what you pay for.
It's a little expensive. To get enough wine to use your hydrometer you have to dip this into your carboy or barrel about four times. I also have a plastic wine thief. The only reason I use this one is when somebody's around and I'm trying to impress them! ;)
