Description

  • The perfect pump for use after fermentation! Self-priming and easy to use for transfers between carboys or kegs
  • Included pre-filter removes solids from your liquid and features a quick disconnect design to easily remove the filter for cleaning
  • Adjustable flow rate from 0 to 3 gallons for gentle transfers and slowly pushing finished beer through plate filters
  • Diaphragm pumps are gentle on the liquid passing through them with much less turbulence and aeration compared to magnetic drive pumps
  • The Vintage Shop has been a pioneer in the manufacturing of products for the home wine and beer industry since 1969
  • Includes tubing and clamps—ready to use out of the box!

Why This is a Great Pump:

  • Self-Priming
  • Heat Tolerant materials to 212°F when used with Silicone tubing
  • Speed Control!
  • Gentle Diaphragm Design

Self Priming: This pump is capable of pumping gasses, meaning that pumping does not require priming! This makes transfers between carboys or kegs incredibly easy. Simply put both inlet and outlet hoses in a bucket of sanitizer and run the pump for a minute. You're then good to transfer your beer with your sanitized pump!

Removable Pre-Filter: This is something which is almost always necessary on diaphragm pumps, as the diaphragm itself is very delicate, and can be ruined by small solids. The pre-filter included on this pump will work to keep solids out of the pump, extending the working life of the unit. And the filter can be removed between uses for cleaning.

Heat Tolerant: All materials used in the construction of the pump tolerate temperatures up to 212°F when used with heat tolerant tubing such as silicone.  Because the pump comes with vinyl tubing you would need to replace that tubing with silicone.

Speed Control: Perhaps the most unique feature is a dial control to adjust flow from 0 to 3 gallons per minute. Use it to send your wort from the kettle to the fermenter, or even after fermentation to send beer through a plate filter (such as our FIL45).

Gentle on your Beer: A diaphragm pump works by moving beer through one pulsating diaphragm into the next. It is a design that is very gentle on the liquid being pumped.

When this pump was first introduced to us, we loved the idea, but had concerns that the speed control would compromise the longevity of the motor. We've built much larger pumps and normally you need a $700 frequency drive to control motor speed. However, we've been selling this pump since the mid-2000s and it continues to perform well and receive excellent customer feedback.

  • This pump comes with 1/2" barbed ports for easy connectivity
  • Comes with 4' tubing on both sides
  • Heat Tolerant materials to 212°F (when used with silicone tubing)
  • 110 Volts, 0.5 Amp, 60 Hz.

I used my pump for the first time to move ten gallons of beer to the kegs and it foamed up bad I’m afraid that this batch will be oxidized. Is there a fix for the foaming problem?
Russell C on Jul 6, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Are you sure that was air making the foam. In a closed loop system where does the air come from? It is much more likely that the foam was CO2 being pulled out of solution due to the pump suction.
It says in the product description that the pump can handle liquid temps up to 212F with silcone tubing, but the instruction manual says that liquid temps shouldn't exceed 130F. Can this pump handle temps up to 212 with proper hosing?
Bill R on Feb 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes, as long as you replace the tubing that comes with the pump with tubing that can handle over 212 degrees.
Can you use this to push wine through a Ferrari gravity feed filter?
RANDALL P O on Nov 10, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure - the pump is not aggressive and it provides a slow steady flow for finished wine without aerating it.
I have read the instructions and would like to know how to properly clean this after transferring wine? I am asking as this will be my second pump as my first pump seems to pump sludge from within the pump.
Kathy D on Nov 13, 2022
BEST ANSWER: What I do after I rack the wine is rinse with a couple gallons of clear water , than I circulate with a couple of gallons of Sterox K cleaner for a couple of minutes. Then rinse again with clear water and then circulate Star San sanitizer for a couple of minutes.
Then drain all liquid out
for a couple of minutes
What is the lift power of this pump (How many feet?). I plan to place the pump on the floor and the input will suck the wine from the barrel on the floor and the output will go to my stainless still tank at 6 to 7 feet high.
Milton T on Oct 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Milton - under ideal conditions, the max lift is approximately 15 ft. However, many factors come into play -- such as the type of liquid being moved, the temperature of the liquid, and the amount of solids in the liquid -- which determine the max lift of the pump on a case by case basis. This is why we do not list a max lift in the description. You should have no trouble in the set up you describe, although we would recommend doing a test run with water to see how the pump performs with your system.
Does it come with food grade tube?
Mohammed Al-Hantoush on Jul 13, 2023
BEST ANSWER: Yes, says food grade right on the tubing.
How often should I change the filer if I am using it to move finished beer from two 6 gallon carboys to Corny kegs about once every other month?
martin smith on Apr 3, 2021
BEST ANSWER: Clean it after every use, per the instructions.
Would this pump be appropriate for pushing RO waste water through my plate chiller to cool wort? My plan would be to have the pump resting on top of a 50 gallon water storage tank about 30” above the tanks drain valve (supply water) and about 4’ away from the chiller. Essentially, the water would need to flow up 30”, horizontally 4’, then down and up another 30”. Want to make sure the pump is powerful enough for the task. I like the fact that it’s self priming (the pump would be sitting above the water level in the tank) and that it has the ability to regulate the flow as I never run my chiller water at full blast. Also, is there an on/off switch? Thanks.
Ken Yorke on Mar 17, 2021
BEST ANSWER: It will work over this distance, but the key is how fast you need the water to flow and if the waste water is free of any silt. I never runit faster then 2 gallons a minute and any silt can damage the diaphram.
Will pumping an alkeline water solution from barrel damage the pump?
John D on Sep 4, 2021
BEST ANSWER: I don’t know. Mine was adding air in the lines so I don’t use. Now I rely only on gravity
I used this pump for the first time yesterday. It started out working great, but after transferring about 1 gallon of wine from my buckets to my demijohn, the suction stopped/reduced to the point that it would no longer transfer wine. I figured maybe the filter was blocked, but it did not seem to be blocked and I cleaned it out anyway, but clearing the filter did not help. I also tried to prime the pump and even that did not seem to help. Is my pump faulty or am I doing something wrong? This is my first time using a pump.
Jeremy P H on Oct 28, 2024
BEST ANSWER: There's a point that when you leave te pump without liquid or wine it makes some kind of release de air , so what you need to do is to pull up the hose of the suction side , so that the little wine that is in the hose goes inside de pump and make de suction again. Or you can try to put some wine or water in the hose and pull it up .

Didn't last.
Motor quit working right at the one year mark. Great when it worked but I expect it to last more than one season for the price.

Ok but possibly vulnerable to early failure
This pump worked well the first three years I had it. This year the head failed and would not pump. The filter got clogged
with some berries that made it into the primary fermentation tank although the berries didn't get past the filter to the diaphragm. Will purchase a replacement her and hope does no recur. Comments here cause concern though.

Variable speed pump works well with wine. Once you find the perfect speed, you don't pick up air. Used in 15 gallon Demi John, only complaint is hose circles around container. Makes it hard to get wine. If it came with food grade extension wand/pipe, would be perfect. Only reason I did not give it 5 stars

Didn’t believe it would be this good
Initially leery of a transfer pump due to possible agitation & oxygenation.
This unit is super smooth with consistent flow.
Joint system is very smart for cleaning.
Filter is nice touch, but I made a coarse pre filter at the intake pipe to exclude seeds and skin fragments that snuck in during pressing. The stock filter did do a great job collecting fines and as was very easy to clean.
Racking time was reduced enormously, as was the commotion.
Only concern is the diaphragm life, seasonal storage, and what happens if it fails mid-drain. (Back to the motorcycle lift for the 100l can, but I have a 200l now too…)

I like the variable speed control. Parts are easy to remove. Clean up is a bit more, but worth it IMO. I think it would be better if mounted/secured in position, as it moves around as your trying to set your siphon hose… I made a rookie mistake… I was running the pump under the faucet to move water through the diaphragm area got shocked and popped the GFI. LESSON LEARNED! I imagine there is a Warning in the instructions, that i neglected to read. Over all a decent pump. I would recommend it for a small home hobby.

Great pump.
Great pump. It is very quiet, simple to set up and sanitize. It is simple to operate as well with the built in speed control/on off switch. The only drawback is that you have to set the speed up to a fairly high setting just to get it started. Once started you can easily slow it to the speed needed. The rubber feet are a nice touch as well, keeping it from vibrating and moving.

I had a smaller pump on a superjet filter and this variable speed pump was a great replacement for it. I really liked that I didn’t have to lift the carboy to do a gravity transfer.
