Description

MoreWine! and MoreBeer! are proud to present quality Hungarian oak barrels from Vadai. Made from the same tight-grained, Quercus Peterea/Sessile oak as found in the French forests of Nevers and Alliers, Hungarian oak has long been sought out by winemakers for its ability to bring weight and minerality to a wine while highlighting the original fruit!

Please Note: We have found that these barrels can be up to 10% larger than their stated volume. Please be aware of this when purchasing a barrel and planning to have topping wine.

  • The wood:
Sourced from the steep, rocky hillsides of the renowned Zemplen forest, the trees grow in a unique soil with a high mineral content. The wood used for Vadai's barrels is selected from 100 year-old trees that are air-dried for three years before being crafted into barrels.

  • The results:
The finished barrels have a high perceived-vanillin content along with bittersweet chocolate, subtle black pepper, roasted coffee, and leather notes. They gently structure the wine in a restrained and elegant way that never steps on the fruit (a quality that makes the Vadai barrels ideally suited for smaller sized lots where overpowering the wine might be a concern).

  • The bottom line:
You get a fantastic barrel at great price!

Note: Hungarian barrels have a slightly different shape than French or American barrels. Referred to as gonczi ("goon-see"), a traditional Hungarian barrel is round and squat with a shorter over-all length (as opposed to being drawn-out and oval like their French and American counterparts). This is important to keep in mind when organizing your cellar (stacking barrels, etc.). We recommend cutting your own wooden chocks to keep the barrels in place and raised off the floor during ageing/storage (hardwoods, like oak, are preferred because they are natually more resisant to bacteria and TCA development).

Approximate Dimensions: Head diameter 16.5", Belly Diameter 18.5", Height 18.5". Bung diameter 1 5/8"

These are Medium Toast barrels.

Would not buy these barrels
Purchased two Vadai barrels and all seemed good. Went through their barrel prep and barrel held water for over a week with no leaks. Upon putting wine in barrel both barrels leaked one stopped but this one continues to seep through the grain. Did more research on these barrels and this seems to be a common problem. They are built with some pieces that have flat grain that allows capillary leaking. This will only show with wine in barrel and not water as wine has a lower viscosity level. Very disappointed and now out cost of barrel and lost wine.

Filled and Sealed - So far So good
6/17/2019:
Since there was no review yet I just wanted to let others know my barrel arrived in good shape, and is (so far) free of leaks. I soaked in a light bit of sani water for ~64 hrs, it had water pooling where the staves extend past the heads. I rubbed about 2oz of barrel sealing wax, but there was still a bit of water leakage. I ran out of time and had to get the beer transferred (I wasn't able to measure exactly, but I think mine came to over 13 gallons).

To my delight there has been zero leakage or pooling, going on 5 days. I will update this review with the barrel contribution to flavor. I expect it to be pretty intensely oaky, a bit peppery, and not as nuanced as a freshly dumped wine barrel. But I intend for this to be a solera barrel that will eventually get it's own character. Based on what I've seen so far, I may get another one.
