Description

MoreWine! and MoreBeer! are proud to present quality Hungarian oak barrels from Vadai. Made from the same tight-grained, Quercus Peterea/Sessile oak as found in the French forests of Nevers and Alliers, Hungarian oak has long been sought out by winemakers for its ability to bring weight and minerality to a wine while highlighting the original fruit!

Please Note: We have found that these barrels can be up to 10% larger than their stated volume. Please be aware of this when purchasing a barrel and planning to have topping wine.

  • The wood:
Sourced from the steep, rocky hillsides of the renowned Zemplen forest, the trees grow in a unique soil with a high mineral content. The wood used for Vadai's barrels is selected from 100 year-old trees that is air-dried for three years before being crafted into barrels.

  • The results:
The finished barrels have a high perceived-vanillin content along with bittersweet chocolate, subtle black pepper, roasted coffee, and leather notes. They gently structure the wine in a restrained and elegant way that never steps on the fruit (a quality that makes the Vadai barrels ideally suited for smaller sized lots where overpowering the wine might be a concern).

  • The bottom line:
You get a fantastic barrel at great price!

Note: Hungarian barrels have a slightly different shape than French or American barrels. Referred to as gonczi ("goon-see"), a traditional Hungarian barrel is round and squat with a shorter over-all length (as opposed to being drawn-out and oval like their French and American counterparts). This is important to keep in mind when organizing your cellar (stacking barrels, etc.). We recommend cutting your own wooden chocks to keep the barrels in place and raised off the floor during ageing/storage (hardwoods, like oak, are preferred because they are natually more resisant to bacteria and TCA development).

Approximate Dimensions: Head diameter 11.5", Belly Diameter 13 7/8", Height 13 7/8". Bung diameter 1.5"

These are Medium Toast barrels.

Great barrel!!
Bought this barrel for six gallon wine kits, it has worked out perfect. As some have said evaporation rate is high, I ended up coating all but the end staves with beeswax which helps a great deal in my low humidity environment. Best wine investment thus far.

Great addition to the cellar
I love my Vadai, I do agree with the description, all my wines coming out of this get a very distinct vanilla flavor. Which is a good thing.

For those who prefer a more "oaky" or "toasted" taste like myself I have found you can supplement with french spirals during the oaking process to add some complexity and "heat". Just be careful not to over oak it. I do think if you could get this is a heavy toast it would be even better.

The barrel set up easily the first time and really improves the wines. I recommend the silicon bung also, it's a must have.

Perfect for Lambic
Unit comes with soaking instructions. My barrel did not leak at all. Currently it sits with a nice lambic for the next year or two.

Hungarian Oak Barrel
This was an excellent value. I used it to age a batch of rum, and the mellow flavors of the toasted oak have done wonders to my spirits over the past 2 years. This is a great product at a great price.

Vadai New Hungarian Oak Barrel - 20L
I purchased this barrel in December 2011. I performed 2 white wine barrel fermentations to strip some of the oak. Since then, I have rotated a 25 gallon Syrah batch at intervals of 3 weeks, 5 weeks, 7 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, etc...
Overall, I am very happy. Although the evaporation rate is high, I haven't topped-up often and have not had any quality issues. Use a silicone bung. Measure the sulfite and monitor that. No contamination and oxygen pickup is low. I did coat the staves (not the heads) with all-natural shellac and that did reduce the evap rate a little.

In a year or two, I plan on moving the barrel to beer aging.
