Pre-Milled:
Description

  • This hop-forward beer recipe kit is modeled after the highly sought-after Ballast Point Sculpin® IPA
  • Bittered with Warrior® hops and finished with a beautiful blend of Cascade, Simcoe®, and Chinook late additions
  • Estimated ABV: 7%
  • Estimated IBUs: 62-69
  • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

Contrary to its name, Ugly Fish IPA is actually one of the most beautiful beers we have to offer!  Designed as a clone of the highly sought-after Ballast Point Sculpin® IPA, the Ugly Fish IPA is a hop masterpiece.  This beer starts with a very clean bitterness from Warrior® hops, and finishes with a beautiful blend of Cascade, Simcoe®, and Chinook late additions.  With almost 10 ounces of hops, the Ugly Fish IPA is definitely a hop forward beer, but does have a solid malt profile that stands up to those hops and helps to keep it reasonably balanced.

If you're looking to treat your taste buds to a beer that we think has been hopped perfectly, we highly recommend the Ugly Fish IPA!

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.067-72
  • SRM (Color Range): 6-8
  • IBUs: 62-69
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 7%

it was cheaper to do the kit instead of buying the ingredients separately. only downside is I would prefer whole hops.

what yeast do you use for ugly fish IPA?
Hector Adame on Apr 2, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You can use multiple yeasts. Something that will finish dry and clean is best. Try these below and make sure to use two packs for best results.
Wyeast | 1056 American Ale® | Beer Yeast | Activator Smack-Pack System™ | 100 Billion Cells

Balance Point at one time had a Habanero spiced version of Sculpin. Any ideas on how one would best achieve the same?
James Duclos on Mar 14, 2021
BEST ANSWER: An easy way to go is make a tincture of habanero and vodka. Any vodka will do and you just need a small amount. All you need to do is remove the stems, crack open the peppers in your hands, add them into a jar or glass until it is full, cover the peppers completely with vodka (or other spirit of your choice), then wait 1-6 weeks for the flavor to develop. The spice will come out in the first couple days, but the flavor from the peppers will permeate much more slowly. Then grab a pint or growler of beer from your keg and measure carefully to find the right balance point of spice and flavor. Then do some arithmetic and dose that amount into the whole keg or fermenter. A quick dash of pineapple juice will help balance the beer back fi it gets too spicy. Cheers!
Can you get this kit with whole leaf hops only?
Dan Stephens on Apr 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I’m pretty sure all kits come with pellets unless otherwise noted. You could call the customer service number for clarification.
I prefer to brew 2.5gal batches. Are you able to sell this kit in for that volume?
Andrew Cunningham on Dec 5, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Our recipe kits only come in the 5 gallon size. It is possible to use half of the ingredients at a time and save the other half to brew at another time. Hops will keep best in the freezer for a couple of months. Grains keep fine at room temperature for a year if you seal them well enough that critters don't get into them. If you want to do an extract batch the DME option will be the easiest to measure and store at home.

Add grapefruit favoring
I ordered this version because Morebeer did not have the one with the grapefruit addition. Same ingredients. I obtained the grapefruit concentrate from a local brew store. Doubling the grapefruit to 1 oz instead of 1/2 oz made it even more refreshing. I used 2 packets of Safeale and 4 oz priming sugar for my 5 gal of wort. Highly recommend this. I am doing the same with Drake's IPA, but with 1/2 oz grapefruit for the test..I may go with 5 oz priming suger for that. Cheers!.

Needs to be a double kit!
Holy smokes, this beer turned out so good my friends just about drank the whole batch leaving only a few for myself. Needed to make a double batch so I could hide a case or two away. Had to start another beer sooner than normal to make up for the speed at which this one got consumed

Not a clone, but good beer.
This is not a clone. The body is close but the hops are wrong. It should have dry hop Amarillo and few more C hops in the boil. Next time I would add the Columbus to the boil

Great summer kit!
Grain bills are hard to fill in my community with the Covid situation. MoreBeer came to the rescue with this terrific kit which fits the bill for summer satisfaction. The recipe is hop heavy, so be prepared with a hop bag, hop rocket, hop cone tube, etc.

My friends have tried for years to make a good ipa, finally nailed it!
My abv came out at 6.8 and this is a super hoppy beer. I loved everything about brewing this. Imagine having 5 gallons of a crisp hoppy full bodied ipa on draft!

Ugly Fish IPA
This came out great. I missed the OG by a little but everything else came out great in the process. The final product tastes delicious. I added the secondary hopes in about 4-5 days before bottling. This you could adjust depending on how much hop you want in the taste. Mine has a good hop taste but not overwhelming. Will make again.

Warning: I've purchased this kit a few times, finally figured out it has too many bittering hops.. Ibu's 101. Went to the end of the style guide, & fell off. Remove 2oz of your choice, for me simcoe cinntinial. Still give this kit 5 stars..

Makes an excellent, strong IPA
With the large volume of base malt, you'll get an OG of over 1.070, unless your efficiency is quite low. You can actually get up to 8% ABV, putting it into the IIPA category (although the color is too light to technically meet that definition). And with all those hops additions, you'll get a very tasty beer!
