I bought this to do starters in a 5L erlenmeyer. I also got a 2" stir bar. It seems to just fling the stir bar to the outside of the flask, which isn't over the magnetic base. Has anyone else experienced this?

BEST ANSWER: Beau is correct that a very slow speed increase is important, especially with larger and wider stir bars. The 2 inch bar is completely smooth. There are other styles of stir bar that have a small ridge in the center and those seem to spin more reliably and faster.

Not worth buying
Like other posts, I bought this a few years ago and used it about 20 times. Out of nowhere it stopped working, Motor is dead. Not worth the purchase, looks for an alternative that will last.

Consider Alternates
Using this stir plate is a waste of money.

I bought it because it looked like a sturdy, no-frills, industrial quality stir plate that could last a long time.

However, after fewer than 20 uses in a laboratory environment this unit quit working.

Dead paperweight
Bought this a few months ago and used it four times. Hit the switch today and zero, nothing, no noise, etc. Plugged into another outlet, still nothing. These outlets are good, there is power. Very disappointing, I would think that MoreBeer would not sell such an inferior product. Now I have wasted $70. I hope I can get my money back, even though it has been more than 30 days (a terrible warranty length). Hello Amazon, here I come.

Won't buy it again; It's okay but died after a couple years of light use
I used it for a couple years and it died on me this weekend before a big beer brew. The magnets would not spin when turned on. It worked fine on 1L starters; much more volume and I couldn't get it to stir fast enough without throwing the stir bar. I need a new stir plate and I won't be buying this one again.

Great value stir plate
This product works great for my needs. I bought a variety pack of magnetic stir bar lengths and styles to find which best works for my system. After a few brews, I found what works best and is the most quiet.

Works great
Simple, fast plug-and-play setup. Quiet operation. Smooth speed accelerator lets you easily adjust the right vortex for any size starter. I bought two. Small annoyance that one's power LED is green and the other is red, but that's totally aesthetic. They both work perfectly.
