Description

This stainless steel hop tube is ideal for keeping kettle additions from clogging your pump or heat exchanger, and works perfectly for dry hopping in a keg or wide-mouth fermenter. Holds approximately 5 oz of pellet hops, allowing some space to permit full extraction of the hop oils. The stainless chain makes it the perfect partner to our Corny Keg Lid with Welded Tab. Hang the tube inside your keg for post fermentation hop, fruit, wood chip, or spice additions. When it's time to remove the hops/adjuncts simply pull the tube out. Works great for timing exactly how long your beer sits on the hops, oak, or other flavoring addition.

Will this fit inside a 2.5gal corny keg? The corny keg says it's 15in tall, but I'm not sure if that includes the handles.

BEST ANSWER: It will fit inside a 2.5 gal corny keg. I have several of these hop spiders for dry hopping in my kegs, and the shorter 2.5 gallon kegs are right at the limit. You can insert at an angle slightly (obviously, you won't need the chain to hang from the lid) but allow for some displacement of beer when adding, and you have to fit around the dip tube. I usually force carb the keg first by rolling, then after everything settles down for a day, I'll add the hop spider with dry hops - makes an IPA taste fantastic!

BEST ANSWER: Sure, I don't see why not. FYI the metal lanyard is not very strong, I've broken 2 already. You might want to replace it.
How much whole hops will this hold?

BEST ANSWER: I'm sorry that I can't help with whole hop capacity. I only use pellets and 3 oz of dry hops will occupy almost half of the volume once they are wet and swell. I actually have 2 of these and split the hops between the two for dry hopping my beer.

Keeps Hop waste to a minimum during dry hopping!!
Awesome.... Dry hopping in my temp controlled conical fermentor creates a lot of sediment when its just loose - which creates flow issues when siphoning into the kegs on the final leg... This Hop Tube prevents all the siphon clogs and lets the beer flow easily.... and makes cleanup easier!

Perhaps folks use this in a keg vs fermentor - but this is my experience and review.

Highly recommended.

For MoreBeer- adding a suggested hop limit (pellet or whole) might be good advice in the product description. I added 12 oz of hop pellets to a ferment - which was about half the tube dry - but when all said and done - that tube was super tight and full to capacity with swollen/soaked hops... I'm nut sure how much you can really add - but I now know 12 oz of pellets is tops for my personal preference.

Hop tube works well
I have used this twice now and I think I can learn to like it. I don't use it as designed with the screw on top and chain. It is too hard to open the hot tube to add hops during the boil. What I do instead is to put the tube near the edge of the pot with no lid on it. I bent a piece of stainless in an upside down U and secure the tube to the side of the pot so it does not fall over. When it's time to add hops I just dump them in.

It seems to transfer plenty of the pellet hops to the boil and is easier to clean than the bags.

Good but not Perfect
Don't get me wrong, I have several of these and use them all the time for dry-hopping in the fermentor or directly in keg. Overall they work great and glad to have the ease of keeping hops contained for cleaner transfers.

My only wish is the the cover and bottom were also stainless. I have a couple of these guys that have started to corrode. If it were 100% stainless and top bottom were not just a plated steel then these would be rock solid for a lifetime. I expect to get on average a half dozen or maybe a dozen uses before they need to be replaced. Hope I am wrong but time will tell.
