Description

This stainless steel bulkhead is 1/2" FPT x 1/2" MPT with a flat, thick rubber washer that makes is very easy to install on most kettles. We use this bulkhead on our weldless spigot. You will need to drill a 1" hole to install the bulkhead.

BEST ANSWER: The shank is 1-7/8" long. This is the same bulkhead we use on our Rubbermaid cooler mash tuns and hot liquor tanks.

My bulkhead leaks if i put the gasket on the inside, no matter how soft or tight I crank it down. If I put it on the outside it doesn't leak at all, but since it's for a brew kettle, I'm wondering if it will melt from the heat of my propane burner. Any insight?

BEST ANSWER: This gasket will stand up to the heat for a long while provided the flames don't lick it directly for too long on a given day. It is made of a soft silicone rubber that can withstand temperatures over 400 degrees momentarily, however continued exposure will eventually cause it to char and potentially dry out.

Hi Jared, as you've discovered, those gaskets do need to be on the outside. They have a fairly high melting point, around 600F I think and I've never had one melt or break down on me. That said, if you're using a high pressure burner on a small pot, the flames can lick up over the bottom of the pot if you crank it up too high. I tend to keep those types of burners turned down a bit to avoid damaging the gaskets. It is still high enough for a strong boil on a full pot. Low pressure burners shouldn't have that problem.

Mine work great with gasket, washer, and nut on the inside of the tank. Although, set up in this way, the threads also have to be sealed- I'm guessing that is where your leakage is occurring. Therefore, I also use teflon thread tape on the threads since the gasket only seals against the side of the tank. If your set up would allow for the fitting and gasket to be installed from the inside with washer and nut on the outside, then you should have no leakage at all with gasket only.

Since my gasket is an inch or so above the kettle base, it doesn't get hot enough to melt. The gasket temperature is a litter higher than the boiling point (the wort temperature can not go higher than 212 degrees thus the gasket temperature is limited to about 212). This assumes your flame isn't high enough to extend past the kettle base.

If your hole is too low, the gasket may not seal because the inside bottom of the kettle may be curved. The gasket could be damaged from the burner's heat, but you can put a thin piece of stainless or other non- burnable metal slid under the kettle as a shield from flame/heat. It will work. Brew on.

Some kettles are finicky... I had the same problem happen to me as well. If you can get another high temp gasket and use it on both ends the outside gasket should not be affected too much by the heat. Hope this helps.

I use mine on the outside, but my HLT and BK are electric. Heat wise it takes the same to boil no matter the heat source. Only concern would be direct contact to flame.

I can not get a 1" hole drilled in my keg to install. Any suggestions? Do the SS bulkheads come with 1/2" body so I can go with a smaller hole?

BEST ANSWER: There are some other weldless fittings by Blichmann that have a 1/2" or 5/8" OD threading. Or you can make your own. You will be looking for pipe fittings that have a 3/8" ID and that will allow you to use a smaller hole.

I would recommend using a cobalt step bit with a 1/2" chuck. I drill a 1/8" hole with high speed drill bit and then move to step bit. I also use dish washing detergent and water solution in a spray bottle for lubricant/coolant. Oil does not dissipate the heat.

You can drill it yourself with a conical high-speed drill bit. The deeper you go, the wider diameter hole you get. Just have to be careful not to go too deep. I did this with no problem. Just do a search for the bit.

If I remember right the bulk head comes with a 7/8" bulk head and will not install on a 1/2" hole. Use a step bit to drill the hole

BEST ANSWER: We recommend putting the red silicone gasket on the outside as that tends to get the best results. We've seen people have success with both options though.

I have 3 of these and have the gasket on the inside. I have had leaks but nothing that hasnt been fixed by simply tightening it. It needs to be on pretty tight, at least for me as I have it in a 60 gallon mash tun.

Will this fit as a direct replacement for the digiboil (7 gallon) outlet valve?

BEST ANSWER: I measured my 7 gal digiboil and the hole in the side is 0.85" (21mm). The digiboil hole has a pressed flange in the metal around the hole so I don't think it would work even if you enlarged the hole to 1" for this bulkhead.

Almost Perfect

The Bulkhead hardware was exactly what I needed for use on a stainless steel pot (thin metal). My only suggestion is to make sure you have a silicone washer to help in sealing. The rubber washer did not conform perfectly. I added a very small amount of 100% silicone RTV and the washer sealed.

Easy to install and no leaks. The gasket has a groove that it sits in some when you tighten it it does slide out of place.

Through-wall for mash screen

wanted to add a 12"mash screen to my 30 and 55 gallon brew kettles. I enlarged the holes that are on my Blichmann kettles for these and it worked out great.

Nice fittings!

Great quality fittings. I installed these on my HLT and like the flat gasket much better than other fittings I have, from another company, that came with o-rings and nuts without the o-ring retaining groove. So far, these gaskets have stayed in place.
