Description

If you want to jump straight into all grain brewing right from your first batch, or as an upgrade from malt extract brewing, the Robobrew is a complete turn key solution. The Robobrew is an all-in-one electric brewery that has built in elements for heating and boiling, an on-board water resistant control panel for setting and monitoring temperatures, a removable grain basket, and a built in spigot for transferring. It is extremely portable and uses 110v power so it can be used nearly anywhere. 

Dual heating elements have individual switches allowing for more control over the heating process. One element is 1000 watts and the other is 500 for a combined 1500 watts! Use both when you need to ramp up the temperature quickly either at the start to get to your mash temp or to go from your mash temp to boiling. Use only one of the elements when you want to hold a temperature.

The digital control panel makes it easy to see the current temperature and set the temperature you want. You can also set a delayed start of up to 23 hours in advance so that you can have your water hot and ready to go when you get home from work or get up in the morning. The digital controller is also water resistant so don't worry about spills or some water dripping down the side. This controller is built for brewing!

The brewery also includes a removable stainless steel malt pipe/basket with false bottom allowing you to easily shift from mash tun to boil kettle during your brew day. The malt pipe includes a handle to lift it from the RoboBrew and tabs at the base so you can set the malt pipe over the RoboBrew to let the wort drain out. It also has feet at its base to raise the malt pipe slightly off the base and help prevent clogging.

Is this the newest Generation 3 model with the upgraded mesh screen and temperature control panel (not the older version pictured in the ad)? I just want to make sure I know what I’m getting before I decide to buy.

BEST ANSWER: I got mine in May and it is what is pictured. The mesh works great during sparges and the temperature is really simple to control. One suggestion would be to get to temperature before you start the timer...this may be obvious but I’ve started the timer and temperature simultaneously and it may take a few minutes to get to boiling temp, so my timing was off. Its just adjusting to new tech.

All in all it is super simple to work with and some much easier to brew with.

Great intro to electronic brewing.
Super simple to work with and some much easier to brew with than a mash tun, boil pot, etc. Just plug it in and start you strike temperature.

Debated getting the more advanced one with the pump but find this to do the job just as well. Plus now I have another project for the future, retrofitting a pump to it.

burned up after 8 brews
I have had the robobrew for a couple of months and on July 4, 2018, I was brewing a lager. While the robobrew was heating up to boil the circuit board burned up. I split the batch and boiled on my stove. I have not found a place to get a replacement board.

I am very happy as it is a nice all in one system.
I was able to achieve 61% brewhouse efficiency on the first brew day. Seeing where you are at during sparge is a bit of an issue.

Very nice machine
I preordered back in November. Was a little depressed when I opened box and not all parts were there. Morebeer’s excellent customer service took care of the issue and Robobrew operates perfectly. I hope to get first brewday tomorrow.
It may not be noted in description but unit without pump is generation 3.

Excellent first impression
My first brew/impressions with the Robobrew:

I set the unit on a wooden box about 17" high. Sitting on the floor, it can be difficult to read and set the temp/time.

The electric elements did a good job bringing the strike water up to temp in a reasonable amount of time.
I ended up taking the handle off while mashing in the grain (by expertly knocking it into the grist) .. fished it out with the mash paddle and just set it aside until needed later.

Mash: I set the temp 5 degrees higher than my actual target because the sensor is on the bottom near the elements AND there is 1.5 gallons of deadspace between that point and the actual mash. I opened it up a couple of times during the mash to stir things up (to maintain even temperature) - next time I'll just pull a gallon from the spigot and dump back in and stir.

Mashout - next time I will just increase the temp using the Robobrew heating elements. Because of the dead space, there is already a high volume of water in the vessel ... which increases the amount of boiling mash-out water required to hit 170. With 10 pounds of grain + 5.25 gallons of mash water, adding a couple more gallons brings it perilously close to the top.

"Sparging" - super simple. Lift and turn. And you can immediately start bringing the temp up to boil while you wait a few minutes for it to stop draining. Have a large pan or something to set this in (make sure it's wide enough to fit) .. I used a 5-gallon pot.

For the boil, I figured out that you have to set the desired temp higher than 212 to keep the elements from turning off periodically.

The chiller was good, but it did take quite a while to cool down. That's where recirculation would come in very handy. Stirring periodically (with a sanitized stainless brewing spoon) helped.

Cleanup was a snap.
I think I can get my brew day down to 3-1/2 hours compared to 5 hours with my previous setup. A lot of that is because I can set it up in the morning and tell it to have my strike water ready as soon as I get home from work. Also, the setup is much less involved than lugging around my old equipment.

Being able to brew inside is wonderful! Now I can brew in the wintertime - I'm not freezing. I'm not trying to check on a boiling pot that is emitting a ton of steam rendering things invisible. AND I'm not racing against the sun trying to finish before I lose daylight.

OK, now more on the "dead space" for your mash calculations.
In terms of mash thickness, the only water that matters is the water that is actually INSIDE the malt pipe.
Between the bottom of the "pot" and the bottom of the malt pipe, there is about 1.5 gallons of water (dead space).
In addition, there is water outside of the malt pipe occupying the space between the malt pipe and the pot.
I came up with a factor of 1.252 to account for that.
Example : I want a mash thickness of 1.2 quarts per pound of grain.
If my brew calls for 9 pounds of grain, 9*1.2=10.8 quarts (NOT accounting for dead space)
Now I need to multiply that by 1.252 to get 13.52 quarts
Now I add the additional 1.5 gallons of dead space at the bottom so my total is 13.52+6=19.52 quarts.

In short the formula for calculating volume of strike water on the Robobrew is
T=Mash Thickness in quarts/pound
P=Pounds of grain
F=Factor = 1.252 (admittedly based on imprecise measurements)
D=Dead space at bottom = 6 quarts

For this example, I use T=1.2 and P=9
P * T * F + D = 9 * 1.2 * 1.252 + 6 = 19.526568 quarts (rounded to 19.53)

How did I get my factor?
I measured the inside diameter of the pot AND of the malt pipe
(this is the most suspect part of my factor ... I'm not exactly using laboratory techniques to get these measurements. Also, I didn't subtract the volume of the malt pipe wall)
Pot=11.75 inches
MaltPipe=10.5 inches
The area of a cirlce is Pi*Radius*Radius
Pot area = Pi * 5.875 * 5.875 = 108.434034
MPipe area = Pi * 5.25 * 5.25 = 86.5901475
Divide to get the factor : 108.434034 / 86.5901475 = 1.25226757 (I round that to 1.252)
