Wow.  If you've never tried the North Coast Brewing Co. Old Rasputin, then you need to brew our clone version of it.  If you have tried the North Coast Brewing Co. Old Rasputin, then you know what we're talking about, and need to brew our clone version of it!

This imperial stout is one of our most complex recipe kits.  Not only because of the ingredients invovled (2 types of extract, 5 specialty malts, and 3 different hops!), but because of the mouthfeel, flavors, and aromas it provides.  This is also one of those beers that continues to improve the longer it's allowed to age.  Our Old Bearded Stout is bold, boasting an incredible roasty, bready flavors, and aromas of chocolate and coffee.  Coming in at right around 8.9%, this is a great beer to "just have one" of, but we won't blame you if you go for a second!

  • Estimated Original Gravity:1.083-93
  • SRM (Color Range): 38-39
  • IBUs: 70-80
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 8.5-10%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. To find our yeast recommendations, choose your preferred kit option above and then select the drop-down menu under “Yeast Options”.  For more info, click on the recommended yeast(s) below in the “You Might Also Need” section below. All included steeping grains will come milled.

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

Not what we hoped for
We didn't notice the high IBUs when we ordered it. We aren't big fans. If you like high IBUs, it might be for you.

Excellent Brew!
I keep this on tap at all times amongst my four taps. It's a favorite of family and friends. I estimate I've brewed this at least 7 to 8 times. Use a blowoff tube instead of an airlock, because this is always a SUPER active batch. I recently experimented with adding a very small amount of Apex Flavors chocolate flavoring and WOW! I didn't know that I'd like this brew even more. Thats the beauty with brewing; experimenting to see what you like and don't like.

Good Stout
A nice & tasty stout. It is good on its own or would make a good base for a bourbon barrel, chocolate, coffee, or whatever moves you. Currently letting bottles age to see if the hotness mellows. FYI, I used the recommended yeast and fermented a 5-gallon batch in a 7-gallon carboy. Krausen was everywhere! Maybe start with your batch cooler than normal and let it warm slowly.

Delicious and Smooth!
I thoroughly enjoyed this clone kit. So much so that I ordered it again. The second batch won’t be ready to keg until Friday. Both times I brewed this kit, it was SUPER active! Very happy beer batches! Really smooth, high ABV beer. I did a side-by-side taste test with Old Rasputin and the clone was smoother and less bitter. I’m sure I’ll brew it again soon.

Solid Choice
Good easy stout to brew that you can enjoy year round. No need to get all crazy and complex making a pastry stout.

Second time brewing---AWESOME
Two weeks in the fermenter, two weeks in the bottle and it was ready to go. I only brought 4 bottles to a gathering and it was gone within minutes. The rest is for me. Chocolate and coffee notes. Rich flavor. Ordering more today.

Lots of flavor in this one. Coffee and chocolate. I got 9%abv on my batch. It fermented like crazy. Used a 2L starter and the recommended servomyces. Completely done in 6 days. Blew the stopper off the fermenter on day 2, and I use foam control and a fermonster. I aged for about 3 months at 33 degrees. Solid brew.
