Description

Propper Starter™ is condensed wort in a can, allowing you to make a yeast starter in minutes! No need to make a mess in the kitchen measuring out DME, and no need to waste time boiling and cooling before you pitch your yeast. Simply open a can of Propper Starter™, pour it into your flask along with 16 oz of bottled or distilled water, then add your yeast. It's that simple!

Comes in 4-packs. One can of Propper Starter™ with 16 oz of water will make a 1L starter with a gravity of 1.040. It is recommended to use the 1:1 dilution rate, regardless of the original gravity of your wort.

Making a proper yeast starter will offer higher cell counts at the time the yeast is pitched, leading to faster, healthier fermentations and better tasting beer! They're especially recommended for lagers and any beer that has an original gravity of 1.060 or higher.

Instructions:

  • Sanitize flask, stir bar, top of can and yeast pack
  • Swirl and open can, then pour contents into flask
  • Add 16 oz of bottled or distilled water to flask
  • Pitch yeast and swirl flask to mix
  • Add stir bar to flask, cover with foil, and mix on stir plate*

Recommended Use:

  • For high gravity beers (1.060 OG or higher)
  • For cold pitching lagers
  • For yeast packs that recommend a starter
  • For yeast packs nearing expiration
Ingredients: water, barley malt extract, yeast nutrient

Shelf life of 12 months. Refrigeration not required.

*Note: the use of a stir plate is not required for making a yeast starter, but is highly recommended, as it will further increase cell count through continuous aeration. For recommended stir plates and Erlenmeyer flasks, see below under "You Might Also Need".

Do I no longer have to add yeast nutrient at the end of my boil?
Michael Kauder on Jan 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I sure would. Get yourself some servomyces packets and off ya go!!
One can is 16 oz, and the instructions on this page suggest adding 16 oz of water, which would make 32 oz total. This is equal to a quart, not a liter as stated, right?
AJ T on Apr 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi AJ - One liter is equivalent to 33.814oz, the finished product will be one ounce less than a liter.
Do you need to use fermaid k or any yeast nutrient to the starter with this?
Chris Burger on Mar 20, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No just add 16 oz of distilled water and your yeast and you are good to go. You will need to mix on a stir plate in a flask with the top covered in foil for 24 hours so plan ahead.
Do I have to use sterilized/boiled water for the 16oz of added volume??
Jeremy Reed on Jan 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Bottled water is an easy source of clean product.

Worth the Convenience
I like to over-pitch with BIG yeast starters for most of my beers, so I usually do a 2-step starter (sometimes 3). This is so convenient to use on weeknights when I get home late and need to build a starter in preparation for the weekend. They're very expensive compared to DME, so you have to decide if the convenience is worth it the cost. Awesome product!

A Great Alternative to Making Starter Wort
Unless there is a better approach, I was always buying 1 lb of DME and making a small batch of starter wort. Having to boil, dissolve DME, and cool wort versus popping open a can is beyond convenient. I have done three starters with this, and all have come out fantastic.

Good Starter
I've used this twice and it works great. I use a starter for all beers regardless of ABV. Very easy to use and very convenient since you don't have to boil. I've noticed less agressive fermentation but it always gets off to a fast start. Will buy again.

Reduces the cycle time for preparing yeast starters. Just expect the can to foam a bit when you pop the top after agitating it.

Love this stuff
I recently used this product for the first time after acquiring liquid yeast that was over 3 months old. I couldn't believe how easy it was to make a starter. You could save a few bucks by using DME in a traditional starter, but the time savings and ease of use makes this product a no-brainer for me.
