Description

  • Extra-large food-grade plastic bucket fermenter perfect for wine kits or high krausen beers like Hefeweizen
  • Almost a full 2 gallons larger than standard 6-gallon buckets giving you plenty more room for active fermentations and larger batches of wine or beer
  • Comes complete with lid, airlock grommet, 3-piece airlock, and plastic spigot with rotating tap (see note below)
  • If you do not require a spigot or other accessories, the 7.9-gallon bucket can also be purchased by itself

This is a 7.9 gallon plastic fermenter complete with lid, airlock, and spigot. The rotating spigot allows you to push the bucket deeper into your counter or benchtop without obstruction. When it's time to transfer out, bring the bucket to the edge of your counter and rotate the spigot to point down. These buckets are made from Polypropylene and are ideal for all types of fermentations, especially beers with high krausen.

Why Polypropylene?
These buckets are made from polypropylene as it is less porous and significantly smoother than other HDPE fermenters. HDPE is porous and can harbor microbial activity making it more difficult to clean and sanitize. Being less porous, polypropylene also does not absorb aroma like HDPE so there is less flavor carry over from batch to batch.

Kit Includes:

  • 7.9 gallon plastic bucket
  • Plastic lid with hole and grommet
  • Airlock
  • Spigot

Please note: the spigot hole comes pre-molded into the bucket and needs to be drilled out before installing the spigot. We recommend using a 5/8" drill bit and taking care not to strip the female threads that accept the spigot. The spigot includes a back nut that won't be needed—simply remove the back nut and thread in the spigot with the gasket in between the neck of the spigot and the bucket. The lid forms a very tight seal and requires a decent amount of downward force to lock in place.

how do you install the spigot?
Gabriel Meza on Apr 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The spigot and the bucket opening are both threaded. You just screw it in. If you don't have a stand and sit it on the table or counter or shelf, you will need to have it turned to a 45 degree angle or it won't sit. It sticks down lower than the bottom of the bucket. I put a lot of static tape / seal tape around it. If you tighten too tight, it will pop back out a few threads and you have to tighten it again.... it's a guessing game.
How do you punch out the small piece of plastic on the bucket that is inside the threading for the spigot? A video would be helpful. Thanks.
Michelle Edwards on Jun 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I used a step drill for mine. If you use a regular twist drill bit, it can grab when it finishes going through the last bit of the hole and possibly crack the thin wall of plastic around it. The step drill has a much less aggressive angle to the cutting edge so there was very little grabbing finishing the hole.
What is the diameter and height?
Jason Shaffer on Jun 24, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The approximate dimensions are: 15.75" Wide x 16.25" Tall
Do the buckets now come uncut? My previous order had the holes already but but there were some jagged pieces left and I'm concerned that those are becoming breeding grounds for contamination.
James Jacobson on Aug 23, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The bucket I received a couple months ago did not have the hole cut for the spigot. Off topic and may not be an issue for most but I did have to use a rubber mallet to get a good seal when putting the top cover on.
what are the dimensions of the bucket?
Frederick Grothkopp on Aug 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Don't forget the lid! And then plan ahead for airlock! My measurements (with lid) and WITHOUT airlock were about 17" high, and 16.5" wide... I tend to err on the side of "too big measurements" when using this hand-measuring tape.
what is the part number for a replacement lid?
Jeff Dahlseid on Feb 15, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hello Jeff, the part number is FE357B.
Lid for 7.9 gal Plastic Bucket (FE357A)
Lid for 7.9 gal Plastic Bucket (FE357A)
Does the circular lid include a gasket around the rim to be airtight?
Matt Telfer on Sep 28, 2021
BEST ANSWER: There is no gasket but it does form a tight seal.
is the 30 L bucket semi translucent, or opaque like many of the white HDPE buckets?
Frank Hruby on Mar 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This bucket is definitely semi-translucent. I am using mine at the moment, and I can easily see the level of the liquid through the wall of the bucket. I like the bucket, but I keep it covered to keep the light out.
What temperature is the bucket rated for? This is the 7.9 gal polypropylene bucket.
Leland Brooks on Feb 8, 2021
BEST ANSWER: The maximum recommended operating temperature for polypropylene is 180°F (82.2°C). Beyond this temperature, the performance values of the material may be compromised.

Worth the money
Ordered this to put mash in. Arrived on time just as expected. Spigots are not predrilled but I typically do not use mine. Slightly see through which is a bonus. I like the thinner sidewalks as I heat externally too. Only downfall I can see if I wish they had screw top lids as these lids are quite hard to seal properly. All in all, These are well worth the money.

Rough start. Assembly tips
Only 4 stars because of the difficulty with the lid and spigot assembly. I have not fermented yet, though it should go well.

There must have been some design changes with the spigot since the instructions and some comments were made.

I used a 1/2" drill for the spigot plug, but there is good flow.

There are 2 gaskets. one must be place on the bucket in the recess at the top of the hole. The other gasket must be placed on the spigot. Using only one gasket, the spigot
bottoms out too soon and will probably leak. Using both, I have no leaks and did not use teflon tape or any thread caulking. Also be careful not to cross thread the spigot.

I also thought the lid would not close tightly. I gave up trying and used bungees and weights to keep the lid on.

BUT

After inspecting the lid and the bucket rim, I found there is a latch and it cannot be closed all at once even when I placed it upside down and jumped on it!

This is what worked for me. Thinking of the lid as clock I put pressure with one hand at 6 o'clock until it snapped. Then with one knee, I kept pressure at 6 o'clock while pressing down with my hands on the left and right sides. I worked my way up to 12 o'clock. Then, checking from the sides, I looked for any high points and pressed those down. I tested it filled with with water and no leaks.

Letting the water drain out the spigot with my finger on the vent, water eventually slows as the vacuum inside increased.

Air tight and the spigot rotates 360 degrees at any time!

This should have enough head room for Krausen, I will be fermenting a 23 liter Ale.

Nice solid poly tank
The fermenter is fine for tinkering with small batches. The bottom spout is a nice feature but haven’t tried it yet. The only thing I didn’t like was the really cheap airlock. It works and all but it’s a cloudy kind of plastic and really cheap. I put my nice heavy duty clear one on and now all is good now. For $30 bucks it’s a good deal.Quick ship too!

Spigot issues, but great overall.
I had to cut a small portion of the tip of the spigot, for bucket to sit level on counter surface.

I also had to wrap the threads with electrical tape (3 times around) in order to make a tight seal.

Otherwise, very pleased with size, durability, utility. Love the volume markings, extra room for fruit melomels.
In use, after slight adjustments.

Bucket is good, lid is crap
The bucket is well made and I like the handles. I guess I will use it to store grain, because the lid is crap. Won't seal even after almost standing on it (200+ pounds). I can't use it as a fermenter.
