Description

PLAATO is a brand-new way of analyzing your ongoing fermentation. This digital airlock sends information about your fermentation straight to your phone – monitoring specific gravity, fermentation activity, alcohol percentage, and ambient temperature – and does so 100% non-invasively. For every single batch, a unique fermentation analysis report is generated that helps you understand what’s going on from start to finish. Know when (and if) your fermentation begins, how the yeast works its way through the wort, and how temperature steps affect the rate of fermentation. With each batch you’ll gain more and more insight into the fermentation process. Plaato connects to your local WiFi and uploads data every five minutes, which you can view at any time with the free Plaato App for iOS and Android devices.

How PLAATO Airlock Works
In the fermentation process the glucose in the wort is mainly converted into equal amounts of ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide. The liquid alcohol remains in the beer, and the gaseous CO2 bubbles up and out of your fermenter. In other words, by knowing the amount of CO2 that has been produced we also know the amount of alcohol produced. This is exactly what Plaato tracks.

Plaato Airlock measures the flow of CO2, and knows at any time the total amount of gas that has escaped the fermenter. This data is instantly included in their advanced algorithms and valuable data can be calculated. This technique is used by laboratories all over the world, but Plaato is the first commercial product that utilizes this chemical relation and technology to give valuable information to brewers.

Designed by Brewers
The Plaato Airlock was developed from the ground up by a team of passionate homebrewers with practicality and ease-of-use in mind. Simply install the airlock, connect it to WiFi, and enter your starting gravity in the Plaato app. The airlock is made from food safe Tritan and can be broken down and sanitized with Star San or other commonly used chemicals. It's also splash proof and designed to withstand overflowing fermentations.

Does this work for wine making?
Ken DeJonge on Dec 13, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Paal from Plaato here. It works for wine, beer, cider, mead and all other alcoholic fermentations.
What happens when an aggressive batch fills this unit with goo?
Matthew Vosika on Mar 20, 2020
BEST ANSWER: I have never experienced this problem. I won’t use the Plaato Airlock with a high gravity aggressive yeast, but rather just stick to using a blow off tube.

Plaato Junk
I would not recommend this to my worse enemy. We did a side by side comparison between 3 Tilts and 3 Plaatos. The 3 Tilts went flawlessly, not so much the Plaatos. We spent more time trying to get the Plaato airlocks to work than it took to brew the 3 fermenters of beer. We had so many problems we decided to delete the 3 and set them up again losing all the data that was all sorts of scrambled. There was 1 we couldn't get to go, one kept disconnecting and the 3rd is finally going but lost data due to the reset. The Tilts we haven't had one single episode. The manager offered to replace the one and when I asked about the other I got no response. I know this crew will spend the extra money on Tilts and send the 3 new Plaatos that we didn't use back for a full refund.

Wow!...Leave it to the Germans to come up with this amazing stuff!
Yeah...it misses the mark by +/- .002 (not the three decimal places), but so do the devices that you drop into the beer as it is fermenting (even after you wait for Krausen to drop). It is top-shelf stuff and this team figured out that "Bluetooth" is better than WiFi! For those of us who would rather spend our time brewing beer than becoming a Certified Network Engineer, I'll explain:

WiFi is supposed to be "seamless" anywhere within your WiFi "Bubble"...Bluetooth requires you to be much closer to get accurate readings without popping the bung. I have a PLAATO Keg ring that works better as a Frisby than a WiFi device. I have a PLAATO airlock device that requires me to be in the same room to check temp, ESTIMATED ABV and yeast performance (BBM) WITHOUT having to open the fermenting fridge. I really appreciate my PLAATO airlock...my Keg measuring device, not so much as it still sits in my Kegging bin like I wish $120 would be sitting in my bank account.

Not worth it
I have used a Tilt hydrometer in the past, I own two of them, and I thought I'd give this one a try. While the two I bought work, it has issues counting the bubbles. The total bubbles goes to zero periodically, so then you have to open the beer, check the SG and then update via the app. It does a fine job of telling you when the beer is done fermenting, but buy a Tilt, they are better.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that you've had trouble with this unit. Perhaps the one you got is a little bit faulty and will need to be replaced with a new unit. We are happy to work with you on getting that exchanged if you follow the "return an item" link at the bottom of our website. Have you had any better luck with the PLAATO since writing this review? Any update would help us as well as other customers. Cheers!
