Oatmeal Stout - All Grain Beer Brewing Kit (5 Gallons)

Please select from the following option(s) to see pricing and availability.
Pre-Milled:
Description

Our Oatmeal Stout is loaded to the brim with malt! A helping of Flaked Oats give this brew a smooth, almost slick, mouthfeel, while three different dark malts—Chocolate, Black Patent, and Roasted Barlery—combine for a very complex roast flavor. A lower bittering rate from a moddest hop addition allows the flavor emphasis to rest squarely on the synergy of maltiness, dark roasted malts, and oat flavor. Oatmeal Stout is one of our most consistently well-reviewed kits and comes highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a dark, roasty beer.

  • Makes 5 gallons
  • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.058-62
  • SRM (Color Range): 38
  • IBUs: 38-42
  • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 5.7%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. To find our yeast recommendations, choose your preferred kit option above and then select the drop-down menu under “Yeast Options”.  For more info, click on the recommended yeast(s) below in the “You Might Also Need” section below. All grains will come milled, unless you select unmilled base malts.

What grain bags do I need ? For the 5 gal recipe? Do I need a hop bag more than One?

Thanks
Andrew Cohen on Feb 12, 2021
BEST ANSWER: If the kit has more then one hop addition you will need a few hop bags. I always keep some around just in case. You can purchase reusable ones that are easy to clean. As for the grain bag, it all depends on the setup you have. I use an all in one Anvil system and don’t need a grain bag.
I started out using a converted cooler for my mash tun, for the grain.

Tasty and easy to add other flavors.
Bought this based on other reviews. Added extra oats, lactose, and cacao nibs as another person suggested. Other that a lower gravity during the mash process, this turned out quite nicely. Will definitely brew this again.

Amazing!!
This beer was one of the best stouts I have ever made! Here to order a second batch. I had 10 people try this beer and everyone wanted seconds..

I added 8 oz. of lactose sugar at the end of the boil, an extra lb of flaked oats and 6 oz. of crushed cocoa nibs for the last 5 days in the fermentation tank. Note, I purchased packaged coca nibs from a nutrition store and had no issues with infection etc. I did not want to go with the vodka sanitation route.
After two weeks in the keg things started to balance out nicely. I would recommend keg conditioning for at least 2-3 weeks before tapping it. The beer had a strong chocolate mocha flavor which was great! I will most likely go with 4oz of coca nibs for the next batch to try and bring out some of the other flavors a bit more.

I'm very happy with this recipe kit
I took the advice from other reviews and added an extra pound of flaked oats for body. I also added 8 oz of lactose sugar at the end of the boil as well as 4 oz of cocoa nibs for the last 7 days of fermentation (I quickly warmed the nibs in a nonstick skillet and soaked them in vodka over night). I used Safale s-04 and left it in the fermenter for 31 days. It came out with a nice mocha flavor just the way I like it, similar to the taste of Left Hand's Milk Stout. This will probably become my go to sweet stout recipe.

Great!
Great kit to start with. So basic, and cheap, that it gives you a lot of room to play and experiment with.

Try adding cacao nibs, coconut, or even caramel to it.

Solid base for an oatmeal stout.

Very good!
My family and friends really enjoyed this beer! I would recommend this to anyone who likes a oatmeal stout. I used safale S O4 and added 3 oz coca nibs and 3 vanilla beans for 5 days before kegging. Won’t change a thing next time I brew this beer!

Great stout.
Have done both the all grain and mini-mash. For the little added effort I prefer the all grain.

Very Tasty
I bought two of these to do a double batch to introduce my brother-in-law to homebrewing. Now 6 weeks later we are enjoying our hardwork. Originally I was going to use a recipe from one of Gordon Strong's books, but for the price this kit was more affordable rather than buying the ingredients separately. Definitely will brew this beer again. For the yeast we used the WLP002 option.
