Description

Upgrade your homebrewery with a complete, fully motorized malt mill that crushes 6 lbs a minute!  Freshness matters and nothing is as fresh as milling grains the day they will be mashed.  The Malt Muncher Pro makes it easy with its built in heavy duty drive motor. Load your malted grains in the hopper, turn the mill on, and enjoy the action and aroma of milling your own malt.

The super convenient stainless stand with tough bamboo base board (no particle board!) allows for a collection bucket to be slid directly underneath. The precise fit between the bucket and stand is designed to contain grain dust.  The bucket features a handle for easily pouring malt into your mashtun and will hold up to 25lbs of milled grain.

The MaltMuncher Pro utilizes the the toughest kind of rollers - cold rolled steel - for longevity.  The gap can be adjusted on both ends for an even, consistent crack. The drive is a heavy duty motor with gear reduction that has plenty of torque for start up yet plenty of speed for a suprising production of 6 pounds per minute.

Features:

  • Fully motorized with heavy duty gear reduction motor
  • MaltMuncher two roller mill with 6lb grain chute
  • Mill 6lbs per minute
  • Easy 5 minute assembly
  • Tough bamboo base board
  • Stainless frame
  • Included grain bucket with handle for easy pouring
  • Cold rolled steel rollers sized at 5" long by 1.25" diameter
  • Adjustable rollers at both ends to move the gap from .025" - 0.1"
  • 12 TPI knurl to effectively pull grain through the rollers while still leaving the hulls intact to later form an excellent filter during the sparge

A Good Addition to the Brewery
MoreBeer did a good job with this mill: the motor is quiet and runs smoothly, the table top looks great, heavy duty power cord supplied, the switch is solid. It's seems to me that MB didn't cut corners to save a few bucks. I have the mill on a dolly so I can roll it around the brewery.

A couple of notes:

1. I brew with brew in a bag method (BIAB). To get good efficiency, BIAB needs a finer grind: 0.030" or tighter. For my first use, I set the gap between the rollers to 0.030", started the mill, then poured in the grain - and the mill stopped cold. It seems that the mill can't grind that fine in one pass. So, I set the roller gap to 0.050", ran the malt through once. I then set the gap to 0.030" and ran the malt through again, this time without a problem. The mill moves the malt through quickly so it's not a huge issue.

2. The mill has marks for the roller gaps on both sides. The marks aren't super accurate and a buyer might want to invest in a set of feeling gauges to check the roller gaps. A future weekend project is to put some tape on the side panels and mark my desired gaps so I don't have to pull off the hopper to set the gaps.

3. I tried replacing the supplied couplings with Lovejoy couplings that have been recommended by some reviewers here and on the motor page. However, when I started the motor, there was a "pockety-pockety" sort of noise that wasn't there with the supplied couplings. As far as I can tell, the Lovejoys (or the installer) introduced some misalignment. So I put the supplied couplings back on - no more pockety. I figure if the couplings start to slip, I can paint on a little Loctite.

4. One fallout from the attempted coupling replacement was that I couldn't manage to replace the supplied tube guard over the shaft. Not shown in the photo is my alternative guard fabricated from some scrap wood pieces.

5. The hopper is fairly small - can't see how you could put 12# of malt in it.

Good mill once you replace the stock spider coupler
I took the advice of Jason O (reviewer for the stand-alone motor, item #MILL702) and replaced the stock spider coupler with Lovejoy parts. The main problem, as I see it, is that the two halves of the stock coupler aren't keyed to their respective shafts. Theu have set screws which simply tighten the two halves onto the shafts but over time that tightening is likely to wear off, resulting in rotational slip and/or lateral shift (movement of one half of the coupler away from the other). In my case the stock coupler eventually became fully decoupled and voila, no more turning of the roller.

The Lovejoys on the other hand have keys (set screws) that engage with the relevant keyway on each shaft and lock them in position (especially so on the motor shaft). I'm hopeful that this eliminates the slippage mentioned above.

Note:to even see / repair the coupler you have to take off the gray protective sleeve which covers the shafts (very nearly the length and diameter of a toilet paper roll). In my case I accomplished this by unbolting the motor. As soon as I got the sleeve off I could see the problem straight away.

Convenient and Effective Milling
I previously used a popular two-roller mill that sits on top of a bucket and uses a drill connection to turn the rollers. It worked okay but I had to hunch over the bucket to keep the drill trigger pressed, which was an issue for me due to long term back problems. Also, I would sometimes run out the battery on my cordless drill, and the mill/drill combination would sometimes topple off the bucket due to the wonky weight distribution.

The motorized MaltMuncher Pro has proven to be really convenient to use and I am impressed by the features and value. On brew day, I can now simply plug in the mill and start it by turning the rotating safety switch then pour my grains without crouching, without pausing to refill the hopper (since I can stand and feed the hopper as needed for large milling sessions), and without spilling grain all over due to mill/drill instability. The close fit between the provided bucket and the mill minimizes dust generation during the crush so I can mill in the garage without making a mess. The stainless steel base is much nicer than I expected and is a single welded unit, so no assembly needed and nothing to get wobbly over time. I do wish they offered a three-roller version, but then again I've always achieved a satisfactory crush with two rollers so maybe I should stop my whining.

The bamboo mounting surface is solid, though mine has a few surface cracks that I hope will not be a problem in the future. I've run 20 or so batches of grain through the mill and the performance has been consistent and there have been zero problems thus far.

The metal support handle on the included bucket is a nice touch for pouring grain into the mash tun with control and ease.

In summary, while my old mill served me well I find the motorized Maltmuncher Pro to be a worthy upgrade for the convenience it adds to brew sessions.

Love this mill!
After years of using my LHBS mill I decided it was time to pick up my own. My main factors for making this decision was being able to mill the day of my brew day (freshness!) and dial in my crush. I have been completely happy with this mill. It's easy to adjust and the motor runs at the perfect speed. The bucket fits perfectly under keeping the grain dust to a minimum and the handle on it is a nice touch. I would like a slightly larger hopper but overall I am completely happy with this purchase! For the price you can't go wrong.
