Description

When you’re new to brewing, knowing what to buy & how to put it together can be challenging. Making a mash tun out of a beverage cooler is one of those projects you might not be ready to tackle on your own. Here at MoreBeer! we’ve gathered all of the components, and built a cooler mash tun for you!

This 10 gallon Cooler Mash Tun with Thermometer includes our AG330 mash tun with the addition of a built in thermometer. The 3" thermometer with 6" probe is preinstalled in the MoreBeer! shop. Installing a thermometer on an insulated cooler mash tun is tricky because you have to drill a larger hole in the orange plastic without damaging the inner white plastic wall. However, it is worth it. Now you can see the temperature of your mash without taking off the lid!

Mash Tun Includes
  • Best quality Rubbermaid insulated beverage cooler made of FDA approved food grade plastic
  • Stainless steel 1/2" ball valve installed in cooler
  • Stainless steel perforated false bottom pre-installed in cooler
  • High temp, FDA approved Silicone tubing
  • Stainless steel tubing connector with 3/8" barb
  • High quality bi-metal thermometer with 3" face and 6" probe.

Because the price was reasonable and it included a thermometer where others didn't for the same price or higher.

I bought one of these, but had to downsize for a while. I got rid of the cooler, but kept all the original hardware. Would you sell a drilled cooler? If not, what size holes would I need to drill myself in a new one. Thanks! This thing was so great.
Josh on Feb 7, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi Josh, unfortunately we don't sell just the coolers by themselves. However, the bulk head fittings will require a 1'' hole.

What is the grain capacity of this tun? Will it hold enough grain (~22 lbs.) for a 10gallon batch?
Matthew Taylor on May 28, 2020
BEST ANSWER: It would be very tight for a 10 gallon batch - maybe if your mashes are thick. I would assume you would use at least 7 gallons strike water for 22 lbs and with the grain displacement, that would put you at ~9.2 gal used and don't forget the false bottom takes up space too. And if you wanted to do a higher gravity beer, it definitely wouldn't work. It works great for me brewing 5.5 gallon batches and you could easily brew as much as 8 gallon batches on it - but I'd look for a larger model for 10 gallon batches.
What size hose will I need for the ball valve barb? Can’t tell if it’s 1/2” or 3/4”.
Nicki Sener on Dec 22, 2019
BEST ANSWER: You need 3/8' ID tubing. I recommend the beverage-grade vinyl tubing with a 5/8' OD. This is a high quality tubing and the thicker wall makes it more durable. I also recommend using a 5/8' diameter spring-style hose clamp to secure it to the barb. It makes for an easy and quick connect/disconnect.
how many gallons needed to reach thermometer probe ?
KIRK VANBROCKLIN on May 19, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I regularly mash 10-12 lbs grain in 3-4 gallons water and the water line for that mix is at least a couple inches above the probe.

arrives ready to mash
treated myself to a pre-fabbed setup, as cost was comparable if I considered time. had to do a little trimming of the connections to correct an airlock when i first used it, and that mid-brew fix made a second point clear - the edges on the false bottom are very sharp! However I till recommend the setup with a caveat to check that it will drain properly with the false bottom in place, and don't get cut and bleed into your first all-grain batch like i did.

Great mash tun, perfect size for 5 gallon brews with room to spare.
Mash tun worked perfectly for my first use! 12 lb grain bill mashed with plenty more room to spare. Although the thermometer was reading about 4 degrees cooler than my instant read thermometer when I compared the two. Need to look into it further to ensure it’s as accurate as possible.
Broke her in with a Canadian Dark Ale. Held temp perfectly for my 60min mash.

Works great
Thermometer is perfectly accurate against my Thermapen. False bottom and ball valve are very good quality. Holds my mash temp within a degree for a 60 minute mash.

Great product...if it didn't leak
I ordered this product because I screwed up my mash tun cooler when I tried to add a thermometer on my own. Everything looked to be hooked up and ready to go when the mash tun arrived...but after I cleaned it and then used it for my first brew, I found it leaked from both the spigot and thermometer areas..not fast, but enough to cause a mess. The other problem here is the liquid leaked into the insulation and I'm concerned it will negatively effect the insulation properties of the cooler in the future. Frustrated...may just have to go back to a simple cooler with a floating thermometer.

Hi Barry - The insulation should still be fine. Did you ensure all fittings were snug prior to use? Shipping and handling can loosen them upon reaching destination.

Nice mash tun
Nice mash tun.Would have given it 5 stars, but the 6 inch thermometer probe gets in the way of mixing the grains.

Awesome Mash Tun
Awesome Mash Tun that holds temp within a degree or two! The fittings are top quality and the false bottom is nice. I use a bag for the grain for nice clear wort -- but the the false bottom works well on it's own. Over all -- this MT will last!
