Monster Mill MM3 - Complete 3 Roller Mill Packages
BEST ANSWER: I wish I could answer that for you but I've had trouble getting the shaft coupler to stop slipping ever since I got it and when I reached out to Brewmaster they were no help. The motor sure seems good in concept but I have trouble figuring out how it's compatible with anything so far :/ that said the mail I attempted to hook into is a three Roller Mill but not a monster brand, again my concern would be with a design in general not so much which Mill it should be connected to
Will this motor work with the mighty mill 3 roller?

2 wires coming out , 1 black, 1 red. I assume black is positive???
Laurence c on Apr 16, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The motor uses and external starter capacitor which will allow you to set the direction of rotation for the motor which is nice. I didn't need to change mine because of the side the drive shaft was on. Because of this you will have to use the include box with the on/off switch or remove and use the starter cap inside if you choose a different switch/box to control the motor.

There are two wires coming out of the box with the switch / starter cap, red and black. The black wire is the neutral and the red wire is the hot.

Technically it will work either way but that is the way it should be wired for safety. In the US for 120 volt wiring white is neutral and any other color but green/gray is hot (usually black for residential wiring). Green or bare wire is ground.

The motor is from Australia, that is why the wiring color is odd. There black is neutral and red is hot.
What is the horsepower and torque specification for this motor? I see that it is 180rpm and the gear ratio is 1:7.5 but no torque specification in in/lbs or ft/lbs???
rick on Oct 26, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi Rick - The motor is 110V and 1 amp, so the horse power should be approximately 0.15 HP.
The kit comes with a coupler for 10 and 12 mm shafts. Is 12mm the same as 1/2"? that is the diameter of my shaft.
John S on Dec 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: 12.7 mm = 1/2 inch . I had a little slippage of spider gear on 1/2 shaft but put a couple drops of loctite and haven't had a problem since. Screws on spider gear collar very small. I really like malt mill motor.
The video in the review shows a control box, but the product description states there is none, and several of the other reviews seem to indicate relocating a switch? Please verify what is included, thank you.
Jeff B on Nov 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You get the motor, two couplers (10 and 12 mm), and what I guess you could call a control box. The control box is just a plastic box with a push button safety switch on top and a starter cap inside the box. You will need to purchase a power cord to plug in the unit and I would also recommend a cord grip to secure the power cord to the box. You can buy a power cord with a molded plug from the hardware store.
Does this still come with a switch and capacitor? For MM3 will this start with grain already loaded?
Jonathan B on Jun 1, 2020
BEST ANSWER: This motor does come with a switch and capacitor. We always recommend starting the motor before pouring malt into your hopper since this will keep the motor healthier longer. Since this motor is specifically designed for the Malt Muncher you will need an adapter to use it on your Monster Mill as another respondent has noted.
What type of power cord should I get for the control box?
Avery C on Sep 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I wired an extension cord to a junction box and brought in the wires from the control box to make the connection.
Will this fit the barley crusher malt mill? Is an adapter necessary?
Luca P on Mar 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes, but I wouldn't buy it, it's too weak and the mill binds up. Get a bigger motor, this is slightly undersized.
Does this come with a capacitor? Will it work with the Monster Mill 3 roller? (With 1.5" rollers, not the pro 2")?
Nathaniel Reynolds on Sep 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi Nathaniel - The extra roller shouldn't pose an issue as there is still only one drive roller. Please ensure the "lovejoy" coupler is compatible, as this accepts 10 and 12 mm shafts.
Can this motor be used with a mill that has 2" diameter rollers (e.g. Monster Mill MM-2Pro)?
Christopher H on Nov 15, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Doubtful. At .15 hp, the motor is quite small. My Crankenstein 320D with 2” rollers requires 1/2 Hp at 200 rpm or less.Enter an answer to this question.
What is the size of the keyway on the motor shaft?

Works well
Fast and quiet. I had to put washers under the motor for it to match up with the mill, it was about a quarter inch lower than the shaft from the mill.

Spider size won’t work on MM3
I haven’t powered up yet as I needed to order a new spider 12mmx3/8 to work with my MM3. There are no wiring instructions. There should be options for the spider sizing.

Would be five star if it didn't require carpentry work
As the title suggests, some wood working, drilling, and soldering is required in order to use the motor. First you will need to make a 9/16 thick wood base in order to correctly align the motor with the mill. After you make the wood base, you’ll need to drill some holes and purchase hardware from the store in order to mount the motor. Secondly, you’ll need to break out the soldering iron to solder the motor to a two-prong cord. Finally, you’ll need a convenient place to mount this whole contraption. I found a small utility cart worked out perfected for this because it was mobile and didn’t require any modifications.

I also wanted to point out that I didn’t have any issues with the included adapter for connecting the motor to the mill.

the coupler is ridiculous
This is a pretty poorly thought out concept.

My 1/2" drive Milwaukee 18v handled my mill fine, but the chuck sometimes slipped on the shaft and sometimes the drill didn't like the load; so I thought I'd upgrade to a full time motor.

The coupler that comes with the motor is ridiculous!!! An aluminum split coupler that has a half inch (at best) of shaft to grip!!! and the fit is silly too. The motor may be a tool, but the coupler is a toy.

I use this type coupler all the time on our farm. Without a keystock in both ends of the coupler and shaft this thing is doomed to fail.

Until this is fixed don't buy it!

So-So
Avoid having to hand crank a mill. Guess what? Shaft doesn't line up with mill shaft (at least it doesn't line up with the Malt Muncher 3 shaft). Have to fool around constructing a base for the motor to line up with the mill. I want to brew, not do carpentry work.

Helpful hints for 3 roller mill
Put the 3 roller mill, base and motor together this weekend. Pretty straightforward but there are a few tips I would pass on. You need 4 6x20mm screws to attach the mill to the base. They do not come with it. Also the motor shaft and the mill shaft are 1 1/4” apart once the mill is mounted to the base. I was able to find a scrap of 3/4” board and cut it. Put two pieces on top of each other and they lined up perfectly. I used 1/4”x2 1/2” machine screws with washers and nuts to secure it. Take the hopper off when drilling holes for the on/off switch if you are putting it all on the same base. Also the roller gap can’t be set with the hopper on so either do it before or just pop it off after. Got a two line replacement cord at the hardware store to connect it to power. Not a hard project just required more trips to the hardware store than it should have if Morebeer would just tell you what you need.

Power motor for grain mill
The motor is great but it could use some instructions. Had trouble with the church and mill shaft not gripping and at first tried a screw but ended up drilling a hole thru the chuck and the shaft and used a cotter key hoping this works. Otherwise it’s back to the drill.

Love it!
Love this thing! So much easier than even using a drill! No more holding a drill at “maybe” half speed, blah blah. Turn it on, dump the grain and good to go! Assembly was easy, you just need a cheapie power cord from Home Depot/Lowe’s. I HIGHLY recommend the LoveJoy adapters as others have mentioned. The included ones are cheap and didn’t work well. If connecting this with a Monster Mill 3: I bought the LoveJoy Jaw Coupling Hubs on Amazon: LoveJoy 41450 (10mm), 48510 (12mm) and 37786 (middle piece).
Downside: the included clamps are not good (replace with the LoveJoy’s), and the mount doesn’t line up with the Monster Mill 3 easily (not really their fault). I made it work by adjusting the height with extra washers I had. Cheap, but it’s solid and it works.
Overall I’d highly recommend!
LoveJoy connections. See review for part numbers. Works so much better than the included ones.
Love it!

Malt Muncher High Torque Motor
Maybe a little pricier than a drill, but then you have a controlled speed that is just right for milling your grains.
Lack of instructions? Not hard to figure out. You'll need a length of wire for a power cord and a plug and you're ready to go. Am not an electrician, machinist, nor a carpenter so a high degree of specialized skill is not necessary.
Tools needed? A drill, a wrench and a metric Allen wrench for the connector on the motor side..
How does it perform? Oh, yeah. Have not tried it from a standing start with a hopper full of grain, but start the motor, pour your grains in and it doesn't even stutter. Quiet. Solid. Great performer. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.
Am using it with a Monster Mill. One of the other reviewers gives the part numbers from McMaster-Carr for the right size Lovejoy connector. The included key for the shaft needed a few swipes with a file, but other than the wiring hookup, nothing else necessary for installation. If using with the Malt Muncher Mill, the necessary connectors are already included.
