This English-style ale yeast from Lallemand is the model of reliable fermentation performance and modest ester production. London ESB exhibits light flavors and aromas of fruit and ester, but is predominantly neutral in character, allowing the malt and hops of the beer to shine through. It's perfect for your Extra Special Bitter, but may also be used in many authentic heritage UK styles like Pale Ale, Bitter and Mild. Use London ESB to make Ciders as well!

Is this similar to wyeast London ESB yeast?

BEST ANSWER: Hello, thank you for your question. Reading the spec sheets, the Wyeast liquid form is a highly flocculant strain compared to the low flocculant Lallemand dry yeast. They will each attenuate about the same, however the Lallemand is a little more alcohol tolerant. They are similar in producing slight estery malt forward beers.
How does this compare to a Yorkshire yeast? I was looking at yeast 1469. I feel S04 is a very poor substitute, however it does make a fine cider.

Fast start, vigorous fermentation
Pitched a 2 liter starter into 6 gallons of 14.4 P Strong Bitter. Wort was at 70 degrees. Vigorous fermentation evident after 16 hours when observed the next morning. Awaiting final results in a few weeks. Temperature control set for 65 degrees minimum.

Explosive yeast
Made session ale: special Bitter with Lallemand English ale yeast. First time using this yeast. Room temperature is 65 -67°F, but wort was about 77F when yeast was pitched. Within 4 hours the yeast was obviously active. Awoke next morning to find it would have been wise to put a blow-by pipe to the carboy at pitching. Fermentation finished in maybe three days - light carbohydrate bill for about 3 1/2 ABV. I bottled a week after that & ale was already beginning to clear in the carboy. Had a taste at that time & expect it will be quite drinkable in two more weeks, which is much earlier than my usual experience.

3 day primary fermentation
I was worried to try powdered yeast, but I used it for what turned out to be a 6.7% ESB. I used one 11g pouch, and primary finished in 3 days.
I will definitely be using dry yeast again in the future.

There she blows
I had forgotten that I used this yeast once before for a stout & how active it is. This time used for a porter and luckily put the buckets in an extra shower - the next morning both had bubbled over and some shot up a few feet. So make sure to spread a lot of towels or put where it can make a mess. Clean out the air locks a few times if it does bubble over or it will back up with a huge amount of pressure build up.

Quick Starter!
Last beer was off an running in about 8 hours post pitch from a rehydrated packet. Finished bulk of fermentation in 2 days and almost got out of the fermenter. I have used it before, and it is a good yeast if you are looking to maintain some malty flavor in the beer. However, if you want a very clear beer you will need to cold crash and or use some finings.

Worked great in a cider. Looking forward to some ESBs.
Used it for a raspberry-cider. Dried it right out and added/kept more of a fruity flavor than previous batches where I used dry wine yeast. I’m looking forward to trying with an ESB.
