This recipe comes from the late homebrewing legend—and our dear friend—Mike “Tasty” McDole. Mike is one of the best homebrewers we’ve ever known, and one of our original customers way back when the entire MoreBeer! operation fit inside a storage shed. Aside from brewing many award-winning beers, Tasty helped grow homebrewing as a hobby, and as a community, here in the Bay Area and well beyond. For many years you could walk outside our Concord showroom on a Friday afternoon and see Mike with the tail gate down on his Four Runner a 2.5 gallon keg in hand. We miss those special times.

Janet’s Brown Ale is the recipe for which Mike won the 2004 National Homebrew Convention gold medal in its category. He once told us the most important critique he ever received was from his late wife, Janet. She really loved this brown ale and it was her favorite of all Mike’s creations. When you’re done brewing this beer, we ask that you raise a glass and toast to the memory of Janet and Mike McDole.

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

This beer had great reviews. Plus it's a little too early for light summer beers, too late for stout and I hate IPAs.

Great brown!
Finished this beer about 4 weeks ago and I love the way it turned out. I ended up dry hopping the beer for about 6 days (I think the recipe said 3-7 days) before bottling and it gave this beer such a great boost of aroma. It tastes great, smells great, and definitely going to be a repeat in the future. Cant go wrong with this recipe. I oxygenated with pure O2 for the first time (christmas present) for about a minute and a half, and pitched two packs of white labs California at 70F and it had one of the most intense fermentations to date. Had to place on blow off for 2 days as my air lock was inundated with Krausen which foamed out all over the sides of the fermenter! Temps were kept constant at 68-70F.

If you're interested in making a brown, this one will make you and everyone who you share it with happy.

Tasty rules
Loved this beer, and so did everyone else who got to try it. We modified the recipe slightly (to copy the original recipe closer). So in our modified recipe, we actually added 0.5 oz of northern brewer to the mash so that only 1.5 oz northern brewer was added at 60 minutes, and left out a small amount of LME (our ABV was 6.3) Tasting of the wort was amazingly good. Tasting post carbonation was malty, hoppy, very very good. Really really good recipe, would buy it again.

This is one of my favorite beers to brew.
I brew this often to keep it on tap as much as possible. Everyone loves to drink this up, it's a great flavorful brown ale.

Outstanding
Brewed this one time & I am hooked. I offered to friends who had a choice of other beers & they preferred this great tasting ale instead. I am brewing it again as its a great beer that is very smooth & bold in flavor.

Base for pumpkin ale
Shop was out of pumpkin ale so they recommended this as a base. I added 15 oz. canned organic pumpkin, and spices based on online recipe. It was good but the pumpkin flavor was lost in the other ingredients. Still very drinkable.

Increase in price!!
One of my favorites but it just went up $8 in the last month! Was $35 now its $43 - Thats a huge increase - I should increase my rates by 25% - I would be doing pretty well.

Great beer but disapointed to see it go up so much

Tasty!
Wasn't able to get a rolling boil on my electric stove top the first time around and had some nasty DMS. Second time was great! Thinking about adding some coffee.
