Description

(Makes 5 gallons) Jamil brews more, consistently high-quality beer than any hombrewer we know. He won California Homebrewer of the Year in 2002, after winning over 150 total awards at brewing competitions, 55 of them being First Place. Of all the beers that he brews, the Chocolate Hazlenut Porter(CHP, as Jamil says) is the cult favorite and the recipe he is asked-for the most. It also won Best of Show 2002, several First Place ribbons, and countless other awards. It comes complete with 25 ml of Hazlenut extract and 4 oz of Cacao Nibs. Jamil recommends using English yeast, WLP002. This kit has a lot of grain in it, so you may find two grain bags useful.

Outstanding Kit
Although my batch came out less than perfect, the flaws were all mine. What was great with this beer was all Jamil. This is an excellent recipe for an excellent beer.

One of my favorite porters to brew.
Love this beer, can't keep it around long enough as myself and friends drink this up. Just be careful with how much hazelnut you add, you don't need/want much.

Hazelnut too artificial
Definitely didn't like the hazelnut taste. After I added the hazelnut to the beer it was way too sweet. Maybe only add a touch. was Great kit aside from that.

way too much hazelnut
If I could do it again I would either not add any hazelnut or just a splash instead of all. Terrible if you add all of it. Bummer.

The Hazelnut is a little too artificial.
Brewed this up and the hazelnut flavor comes racing in and tastes a little too fake. The beer aged and it was definitely better. I would try this again, but might use less of the hazelnut extract, or might try mellowing it with oak chips.
Wow it is late... but I was thinking about soaking oak chips in a cup of Maker's Mark for a day and adding that to secondary fermentation. Chocolate Hazelnut Whiskey Barrel Porter. Well maybe that is too much? Then again... maybe not.

A hit
This is one of my biggest hits with friends/family, even with those that don't really like the dark beer, it just tastes so good. It's hard to keep it around. Definitely recommend!

Popular
This has been one of my most popular brews to date. It appeals to both my beer obsessed friends as well as the others not usually inclined to partake. I think next time I would reduce the amount of hazelnut extract used because it was quite strong. It did mellow a bit after a couple months but I still think less would be better.

hazelnut porter
I brewed this a while ago. I usually keg but I felt bottle conditioning would be better for this recipe. I would suggest not using the whole bottle of hazelnut extract, but maybe it will mellow with age. This was my first time ordering from more beer but I definetly will order again.

EXCELLENT
I wanted to try something a little different and not typical. The chocolate and hazelnut are subtle and not overpowering at all. To date, this has been my all-time best brew that I've made. Even my wife likes it and she doesn't really like beer. I highly recommend and will be buying more again.
