Description

2 L - Great Western - California Select, recently rebranded as Pure California, is a 2-row malt that is a part of a new line of state-specific, I.P. (identity preserved) malts. These I.P. malts are perfect for brewers who wish to brew a beer with local ingredients. This California-Select malt contains barley that is solely grown in California. Average 2L in color. A clean, neutral malt perfect as a base for almost any style ale.

Great for SMaSH
I've used this as my base malt in a single malt/single hop pale ale twice now. It does a good job of laying a foundation for the hops to shine.

Versatile and Reliable
This is a great base malt for almost any style. Its clean, neutral taste lets the flavors of your specialty malt additions shine. I've never had issues converting non-barley adjuncts when I've used California Select. Very consistent from batch to batch. It's also nice to have a locally sourced ingredient as a major component in my beers.

No frills base malt
I just switched over to using this as my standard American 2-row base malt. It is a little less bready and sweet than the other offerings, but I prefer that especially when trying to make a very simple and clean brew. It's almost somewhere in-between pilsner and some of the deeper colored 2-row malts available (in terms of flavor and color).

My Preferred Base Malt
This is my current house base malt. I find the neutral, mildly sweet flavor to be perfect for any ale style.
